Pyga Stage mini Max or 2018 Specialized Camber comp carbon 29er?

Look, be honest.  This whole "a seperate bike for every occasion" is a fool's errand.

29ers that are 27+ compatible.  Bikes with high and low / steep and slack settings.  Linkage hacks to make your bike do different things.

In the end you're going to decide on a setting and ride the bike like that for good, so get the bike that already does it all well enough, instead of convincing yourself that one day you're going to spend a small fortune in getting a second set of components to turn your marathon bike into a proper trail bike (aren't you going to have to get a longer fork as well to turn the stage into a Max?).

Just buy a proper trail bike that can ride marathons.  Bottle cage is solved with side entry cage and the SWAT compartment paired with all the other SWAT solutions of Spez means you won't need a backpack again (fair enough they can be used on the Pyga too though, except for the built in recess).

Point is, don't let the "future Frankenstein's monster" angle be the deciding factor.

But that's just, like, my opinion man.

I test rode the Pyga again today.

What an awesome bike. Its just so efficient. The suspension is so composed and it turns and handles in a way that gives you so much confidence. Probably a bit too much confidence for my skill level!

It just begs you to go faster and jump higher. Granted, the Pyga had a better front fork with more travel than the Camber I was comparing it too. It also sits in a higher price bracket. Would be interesting to try the more expensive versions of the carbon Camber with a better fork. The carbon Camber is also a great bike, it just needs a top quality fork on. However, in my humble opinion, the rear suspension design on the stage is superior. It manages to feel plush and compliant over rough terrain but very stiff with what seems like no pedal bob when you pedal hard. Even when standing on the pedals. And by the way, I rode both bikes with their rear shock in the middle 'pedal' setting.

So, the Pyga stage mini Max takes it for me. Looking forward to putting it together!

I'm confused.  Camber has 120mm front and rear. the "Mini" Max I gather is basically a Stage with a bigger fork on it, so 100mm and whatver you slap on front?  So what will you run up front, because 140mm fork with 100mm rear sounds mightily unbalanced, even 130mm.  So if you go 120mm it's basically a mini-Camber too.

But with the Camber you can happily run 130mm fork up front.

Anyways, just thinking out loud. Both are great bikes, and it sounds like the Pyga has your vote.  Enjoy.

AFAIK mini max is 105 rear and 120mm front.

How does one pronounce Pyga? Is it "Pie Gah" or "Pig Ah" or "Pigger"? Anyway it seems the obvious choice of bike if you like bacon, pies, or eating in general. Which Buffet obviously does.

It's pronounced "pee-zhe". It's a Micronesian word.

This month Bicycling has a nice comparison on a few bikes, Stage and Epic were in there. Have a read, they are different specs to the ones you are looking at, but they do talk more too riding dynamics than to component specs.

Its like choosing between a Porche and a Ferrari. Finding it damn near impossible!

Both bikes would come in with GX 12 speed and Rock shox Revelation. Similar alloy wheels. Stage mini max is 110mm rear and 130mm front travel. Camber is 120mm all round. Stage is full carbon & Camber front triangle carbon, rear alloy.

Would come in at very similar price, Stage around 5 grand more...

Test rode both. Stage feels a bit faster, very stable and sure footed. Very efficient. Climbs like a beast.

Camber is more nimble, very flickable and perhaps a bit more fun in the twisties. Climbs like a demon eventhough its heavier but not as stable on jumps and decents. They are both great fun and awesome bikes. Loved them both.

What other factors should I consider? This is a very stressfull first world problem.

Both are excellent bikes. If you like the Pyga then buy the Pyga ! You won't be disappointed !

I Ride a ''Pie Gah" OneTen29. It's unbalanced with 110mm rear and 140mm front travel.  I Like eating and also drinking for that matter and my 100kg chassis is proof of that.  "Haters Make Us Famous" !  Every time I throw a leg over her, she does what I want her to do and put's a smile on my face while doing it

Are there any Pyga haters out there? I have yet to hear of one, which is always a good sign. Keen to swing a leg over one myself, hopefully someday soon...

They're great bikes. They're not the Lord Saviour of MTB'ing though, which some will have you believe.

The Pyga brand is probably a bit overrated on the hub to put it mildly.

In the 2017 Epic for example 32% of riders were riding on Specialised bikes...1 % were on Pyga's.

If 50% of all entrants were foreign it means that at the most only 2% of South African Epic competitors used Pyga's.

A lot more propaganda is required

It's ironic how often peeps go on about Pyga's indestructibility and how their geo is so progressive, but even the newer models, such as the Stage and Stage Max, have very middle of the road geometry and there have been numerous posts here of okes snapping alu Pyga frames.

Yes, they're solid bikes, but ease up on the Kool-Aid, fanbois.

I have a Pyga Stage mini max.

Now I want more travel.....cannot fit a pike shock on a Pyga stage, bit disappointing,

If I had to buy again I'd get the Max, 67 degree HAT vs the current 69 degrees.

Then of course if the Santa Cruz bikes were just a little more attainable....

Good luck with the decision.
