...have the X8SL...have ridden 1 night race off road and 1 early morning training ride on road...I am more than happy I think it is good value for money and is an adequate light for most, if not all, situations. It's compact and fairly light...battery can fit almost anywhere.

I have the Sigma Mirage Evo pro 5 +10watt; When I ride next to my friend at night with his X8 switched on, you cant even see his light as mine just "drown" his light completely. The new Sigma lights are even better;

they are a torch at best. If you are a serious comuter or night rider you will need a whole load better than this sort of light

Must agree MP, I also got the Evo PRO, no complaints for my kind of riding (road and MTB)! And I paid under a 1000ZAR's

Pickled, they are crap. The light is crap, the chrging is crap and the brackets are crap. ANyone serious at riding after dark needs  at least HOPE 2LED(My humble opinion is that this is the entry level, the rest are just torches.

no problem if the sun is still up.

Lets face the fact. if you cannot see the benifit of a good light kit you are better off riding in the day. You could always go to the gym session for a spin class, the torch will be handy when you need to find your car if you are running late!

You don't always need the brightest possible light to have fun doing a night ride.

 

The lights we used 10 years ago to ride single track with might be "torches" by todays standards, but they worked and we had fun.

 

By all means compare products (in the same price range) and give reasons why one is better than another, but just calling a product cr@p without any motivation does not add any value here in the Tech Shack.

I agree with Mountain lion, it's all about requirements, not about what is the brightest.  Agent Orenge has lights that absolutely wash mine away (I had to check whether mine was on when I rode next to him!), but mine is more than adequate for things like coimmuting and night riding for al but the most technical singletrack.  Would I like to have his lights?  Yes, but I don't have his budget and mine are fin FOR WHAT I USE THEM FOR!!!

I am running Lupine and USE

 

LIghts are one of may favourite topics though.My humble opinion is that currently (this week) the twin led Hope is the best value when all is considered, Brightness, Bat, Charging, mounting(this is my favourite.

 

I would rather have a R3K light  and a 1k bike than the other way round when riding at night comuting.

There are a lot of Okay lights, but the good ones have got much cheaper even in the last 3 months.

this sort of ilumination is almost pornographic

 

In fact I would go as far as to say deviantly pornographic. 

 

We are looking at a bracket to hold 2 Betty's and a Wilma with Helmet mount. We are going to play with short and long throw on the Bettys

 

Then add to it the engineering, we are machining a stem plate to hold the brace of Dirty Betty's

 

Those blackburns and the like may come to good use for rear lights with a red lense cap and a single 5 watt LED. We are looking at that as well.
