I have real sympathy for the riders after seeing the carnage of yesterday's stage.

It made for exciting viewing, but I am beginning to wonder whether it has a place in Grand Tours, as others have been saying.

In Classics races like Paris-Roubaix you know that it is all-in for a single day of racing and you can justify the risk.

Great viewing vs High risk to the riders.... I don't know, still on the fence leaning towards removing it from Le Tour.

Mmmm. sprinters and classics guys have to get themselves over mountains.. can't see why GC riders shouldn't ride over cobbles... come let's not baby them, they have had a year to prepare for it.[emoji6]

Have a look at the GC guys that went to the classics to get a feel for it during a race.. they all did pretty well yesterday.

Not sure that's an even comparison. Mountains hurt but crashes put you out of the race. GCers were lucky this year - tons of crashes but no cobble induced DNFs...

Edit: Plus - sprinters get to sit in the autobus on the mountains - no autobus for the cobbles!

I read that the French fans are unhappy that Sky attacked while Bardet was off the back with a mechanical, does that mean that there should have been no attacking throughout the day or only no attacking by Sky? because Bardet was forever off the back with bike problems. In fact he was well off the back when the winning group went away.

I haven't seen that.. but they would have finished at 10pm had they waited every time he had to sort out his bike..that's just lame.. on a day like yesterday.. no-one waits.. actually they should never wait..bike tech and skills is part of cycling that unwritten rule must go away.

But they fall on downhills too?

You can't ever take risk away, hell Valverde wiped himself out in the rain last year.. what they can do is prepare for as much risk as possible.

Sure but there is no pressure on the sprinters in the mountains - no sprint points at the end and a 25% time allowance to finish.

An equal comparison would be to let the GC contenders ride in a comfy group by themselves on the cobbles and finish 25% behind without being penalised...

Here's to attacking anyone if they have a mechanical!

I would prefer that!

Equipment choice and backup of said equipment is supposed to be part of your racing package.

If there is outside influence, then it is a different story, like fans causing a crash because they dislike Froome. Or those nails that caused mass punctures near one of the summits a while back. Then you sit up and reset and race after everyone is back where they were.

A lot of the sprinters will tell you it is sometimes not easy getting there before cut off..

But let's agree to disagree on this one[emoji1303]

I would like to see more classic stage in the TDF.. where is it written that it must be a climber - TT specialist that wins it.[emoji6]

Sprinters have their days, Classic specialists have whole races to themselves, shouldn't the skinny climbers and TT specialists also have their days too?
