Derailleur for new wheels (road)

Hi, tech nooblet here.

I want to upgrade the wheels on my trusty ol steed to a pair of Fulcrum 3 Racing (2WayFit) wheels.

Current setup (pics included) :

Cassette : 11-28, 8 speed (relatively new)

Derailleur : Shimano RSX (old!)

Chain : ??

Freehub : ??

Crankset : Shimano 105 53/39 (new)

Rims : Alex Rims (old!)

So as I understand these new wheels are compatible with 11 (9/10?) cassette sizes. I would like to keep the 11-28 min/max range on the new setup.

Questions:

1) Do I need a new Cassette? Or can one just "add" additional cogs?

2) I have no idea about freehubs, will the new wheels come with this or is this an additional purchase?

3) If I go for a new Shimano 105 derailleur, do I need the SS or GS?

4) Will I need a new chain?

5) Say for instance I will need a new cassette (11-28;11 speed) , would it be possible to run the old wheels with the 8 speed cassette on the new derailleur/chain setup?

6) Anything else I need to take into consideration?

Thanks!

to upgrade from 8 speed to 9/10/11 speed you will need ...

New RD
New Shifters
New Cassette
New chain
New cables
probably new tape also

the freehub you get for free but only if you buy new wheels ^_^

basically you will get to use your frame/bars/saddle and brake calipers not much else

honestly it would be easier to just upgrade the whole bike by selling it and buying a nice used 9/10 speed in the classifieds

Im sorry to say, but if you want to go 11spd, its a total groupset upgrade. This includes:

Shifters, cranks, chain, cassette, rear derailleur and front derailleur. See now you have new 105 cranks on there. Why not just go ahead and upgrade the rest as well maybe, with some 2nd hand 11spd 105 parts on here it wont cost yopu more that 3500.

Otherwise, best for you at the moment would be to fit your 8Spd cassette on your new wheel. A spacer might be needed to accomodate for a longer freebody, but thats it. The freebody comes with the wheel.

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies. Obviously not as simple as I thought then

Will need to give this some thought regarding the options mentioned.

Thanks again!

EDIT : Quick Question, a Shimano 105 SS derailleur will work on a 11-28, 11 speed right?

Would you like to upgrade, or just know whether your current derailleur and cassette will be compatible with you 9/10sp freebodied wheel?

Your current cassette and derailleur is 100% compatible with the new wheels if they also use a shimano freebody.

You have the ideal opportunity to do the n+1 thing here.

If you buying the wheels new you'll need a Shimano freebody and if you buying 2nd hand  just make sure the wheels have a Shimano freebody.

As far as I understood that old derailleur does not "support" 11 speed?

You want to upgrade your derailleur / groupset and the wheels or just the wheels ?

Taking from Vegmot's and others comments, this is as I now understand it : I can upgrade the wheels and keep the current setup as is by implementing spacer(s), but have to stick to the 8 speed, until new groupset or n+1  :D

Yes you correct.

You can get new wheels and keep your current groupset. Spaces will be required for the wheels to accommodate your 8 speed cassette.

OR

You can upgrade the wheels and the groupset

OR

Get an additional bike (n+1)

I think you could also get a shimano claris 8spd derailer and it should have the same pull ratio and will look similar to crank.
