How to lock the Garmin 520 screen while cycling?

How are you bumping it unless you happen to be changing screens manually whilst riding?  Hands are far away on the bars, garmin is on the stem on in an out front mount.  Only other way to bump it is when you crash!!

If you are bumping it because you are changing screens whilst riding, would be better to set up your main screen with all the relevant data info you require whilst riding.

Only time I touch the garmin during is a ride is to start it and to stop it.

As for a lock button function, I do not think there is one

The start stop button on the 520 is bottom right. On my out front mount it sits virtually level with my bars and so close to the bars it's actually not easy to push that button.

I reckon you need to give us some more background/lead up to this thread. I would love to know how/why you have stopped it accidentally.

Please send a photo of how you've mounted your unit. As others have noted, it's pretty tricky to press start/stop/lap when using and out front mount. If you're using the elastic-mount-jobbie, try mounting it on your stem, making sure it doesn't overlap the steerer as you might bump it with your knee. just a thought....

Hi all, thanks for the replies and feedback

I dont fiddle with the Garmin 520 whilst cycling, it was just very convenient on my 510 to be able to lock the screen whilst doing a multi stage race, or long endurance ride.

Sometimes stopping for the odd banana, GU, or koeksister resulted in accidental bumps against the unit. Even when pushing my bike up one of serious hills in the Magalies Monster once resulted in a bum.

Its clear that the 520 is designed to fit snug against the handle bars with the front mounted bracket and really not a problem. However with the top mounted bracket there is always the possibility of bumping (clumsy) the starting button, or lap  :w00t:  :w00t:

Clearly the fitter riders dont have the problem, however the 4 hours finishers on 947 still spend a lot of time on the bikes lol

Let me know if the 520 has the function, or am i to be more careful!!

I’ll be honest that I do occasionally hit the start stop button accidentally, but this is caused by my own preference. I use the out front mount backwards so that the unit sits over my stem because I feel that on a mtb an out front is just asking to be broken if used in the traditional way, hey we do fall off our mountain bikes, a casual otb could become pricey, I might be wrong but leave me to my insecurities. I have a stem cap mount as well but that would also negate where I keep my chain tool (swat). For me I just have to live with the occasional paused ride

Thanks a million!! will stick to my decisions and keep my stem mounted bracket on, the upfront is just too risky on my MTB.

Cheers

Your 510 was touchscreen so you needed to lock it. The 520 is button operated and you have to push the buttons quite hard, so you will have to be seriously clumsy!

I gotta say, with my 520 I have knocked the lap and start/stop button a couple times while pushing the bike. I like to push using one hand, holding the bike by the steerer tube and stem (which is where the garmin sits). A lock button isn't a necessity but would be nice. Like has been mentioned, an outfront mount just makes me feels very uncomfortable on an mtb, and so does a handlebar mount. The stem mount works perfectly with the exception of the knocking of buttons ocassionally. But it's a very small problem for me - has only happened a handfull of times in a whole year.

I think it's something the should be able to add on with a firmware update. Would be nice to do it the same way as a Fenix 3 - Holding in the light button for 3 seconds gives you the option to lock, and to unlock again you hold it for 3 secs.
