Gear ratio

Hi Guys

I am contemplating changing from my current 32T chainring and 10-42 cassette (1x11 setup) to 34T chainring and 11-50 cassette (1x11).

My question is: will I actually be gaining anything from this change? I found a gear ratio calc online and if my understanding is correct I will actually loose out on my top end and on the 50T at the back I wont be pedalling much easier on a steep hill if I understand the ratios correctly

I am not that technical so looking forward to your input

Thanks

Yes and no.

The easiest way to think about it is to have a new cassette (min and max sprocket) with your new 34 chainwheel which is equivalent gearing to your current 32 & 10/42. This gives: 34 & 10.6 & 44.6. ie 34 chainwheel and a rear sprocket of 10.6 is equaivalent to 32/10, likewise for the big sprocket. All ok? (yes I know you can't get a 10.6 sprocket but its the number that's relevant).

So comparing this equivalent set-up to your proposed 34 & 11/50, you can see your max gear will be slightly smaller (11 vs 10.6), but your easiest gear will be significantly smaller (50 vs 44.6).

Make sense?

If you have a 10-42 currently then you must have an XD driver.  If you have that, then changing to an 11-50 cassette would need a different driver.  Why not use the GX 10-50 cassette with a 34 on the front?  That would be an improvement.

As mentioned above, this would be your best option, you would get the best of both worlds.
