Garmin Recovery Advisor

Afternoon folks,

After my tempo-ish group ride this morning, I noticed that the Recovery Advisor on my 520 was half of that of my 935. Who can this be? They use exactly the same algorithm, written by FirstBeat, yet the hours differ significantly. I use my chest strap to record HR and not  the optical sensor.

Who else has come across this?

Never found the need to use both devices at the same time in a particular event/ride.

But that is interesting unless the Edge 520 is a updated version?

Go have a look at the FirstBeat website and compare the two devices. I'm a bit of a techno-junkie and bonus was handsome.

500 (discontinued) -> 510 (discontinued) -> 520 (introduced 2015), arguably the best Garmin on the market.

Did you maybe do a different training session with the 935 a day or two before this excercise that the 520 did not know of? It might be adding those outstanding recovery hours which were not depleted yet to the hours of the latest session.

Don't actually know if the units take any previous sessions into account, just venturing a guess to be honest.

my 735XT has recommended 3 days of recovery once where as my 520 never goes more than around 36 hours. and these were for the same exercise (1 hour of absolute suffering on a wattbike).

So if anybody has insight I would be interested to hear.

Previous recovery that was not depleted on the unit will have the new value added to it, but I’ve never seen it go beyond 3 days (72 hours). So any previous days workouts that had some value left over would be added.

I know as I’ve seen the recovery change last year on the club ride to Durban - 72 hours after day1, then 57 at breakfast the following Monday morning only to see it return to 72. By the end of the tour, it was sitting on 53 hours.

This is correct, they incorporate history into the calculation as well.

There is some more info on this somewhere on FirstBeat (IIRC), I posted it somewhere on here a couple of months ago.

I can try and find it again, if needed

The recovery works on heart rate variability - The 2 machines probably have 2 different calibrations of "normal" for you.

I am not sure how you force the at rest calibration - must be a way - mine seems to do its oen thing and I just ignore it.
