Hi

Tech service Help.. I was bleeding breaks and all was going well then when compressing the brakes I heard a click and sudden total loss of pressure.. then the whole system proceeded to drain out.

What could have gone wrong.. the brake cable now seems to have a new tear in the outer casing. Could that be all that's wrong.. or has the caliper busted a seal..

Kind regards.

Mornings Johann, happy New Year and all that jazz. All the best to you and yours.

Brakes SLX Shimano, bleed process went perfect. Until the end where with the the cup still attached, you tap the system for air bubbles and pump the brakes.

Then something clicked, which could be the cable damage..but the oil is coming from the piston..

Sounds like piston at the caliper popped out, remove pads, take something like a tyre lever and push both pistons in caliper as far as possible in.

Make sure you are bleeding with the yellow bleed block with no pads, or the red pads block if pads are worn

Juddy bleeding brakes is very doable and you don't need to be all that technically minded.

There are however a couple of do's and don'ts.

Best is to go to Youtube

Then retrace your actions.

I think we are a bit confused as to what you say the problem is.

I suspect that you took the wheel out and did not place a spacer block in the caliper.

Doubt that the cable split but it's easy to replace.

The Bleed went perfectly .. well almost, at the end of the bleed, i pumped the break level, then something clicked, popped.. then all the brake oil drained out of the caliper,

brake block was still in so its not the piston popping out, but after cleaning everything. its pretty clear the oil is leaking from the piston itself.

If the caliper seal gone ? need a new caliper .. or could this be a cause of the break hose failing.

what the possibility that the caliper is fine and i just need to replace the hose  ..

'Bleeding" and "cable" ?  No.

Where's it leaking? At the lever or at the caliper?

Did you loosen anything other than the bleed screws?

I guess you have an early morning ride (SA time)?

Caliper leaking.. :-( .. and yes late night maintenance efforts ended in disaster ..

Only bleed screws loosened, i posted a few pictures

Still had the block in there when it popped ..
I didnt notice the cable damage before or during, but as soon as i heard the click/pop i noticed the cable damage .. could that cause the oil to drain out from the caliper piston ?

Well, you learned quite a bit in one late night lesson ;) Look on the bright side, you can now sort your own stuff out without having to fork out $$$ for some (usually) arbitrary "oke" to do a half-arsed job.

Did you carefully push the piston back in and then start all over again?

Google 'epic bleed solutions" one of many very good tutorials available.

Most importantly are you now sorted and riding?

No, I didn't mean the piston popped out. That's still in and fine. Bleed block stayed in.

What popped out I have no idea. No riding for me :-(

Could it be just the cable damage or do I have to replace the caliper.

I suspect the seal of the piston in the caliper has failed.

Google and search Youtube if you can fix it as I think Shimano does not supply parts so it could mean a new caliper. But I bet someone on the web has found a way around that.

I have Avids (yes believe it) and they are completely serviceable.

Cables don't fail - the connection can fail but not in this instance.
