I bought it along side a 9speed 11-40t for my dad who has gone 1x9 recently and is chopping af with his 11-34t. Not that I had any plans for the 8speed, I could put it on my road bike that is currently 1x8 with a Shimano 11-34t but I am pretty comfortable with is as is.

Maybe if I get a cheapie 8speed mountain bike I will try out this cassette, just keen to know if anyone else has one and what derailleurs work with them?

Gap jumps between the gears are of no concern to me, I just apply more HTFU.

IIRC, most of the older MTBs were 3x8 (... As opposed to 1x or 2x). So similar to the 'long cage' of more modern RDs.

If you go 1x or 2x op front, it should be fine at the back...

I have the 11-40 9 speed on a old bike and it works pretty well. Only issue was the old derailleurs werent designed for such big sprockets and i needed a very long b-tension screw to make it work.

How is the 1x9 11-40 working out? I'm keen on making this change as well.

Very well, my old man has been doing a few rides on his rather heavy Trek X-caliber with a 1x9 (30 x 11-40) setup and actually rides better than when the bike was still stock a triple crank and 11-34 cassette at the back.
