Hardtail Bike for Heavy Beginner

Hi Guys

I am looking at getting my first bike to do some recreational mountain biking and get my weight down. I am a complete novice but looking to buy a bike that i will not have to upgrade immediately.

There are many choices in the sub R15 000 category but my biggest limitation is my weight. Tipping the scales at close 150 kg means I am not sure whether to go with a decent 29er or basic 27.5+ wheel size. I've visited numerous bike shops and have received conflicting advice. One store even told me i am likely to bend the axles on a 29er and recommended that i go with a 27.5+ Titan due to the 2.80 wide tire profile.

So should i be worried about buying a new 29er, considering my weight ?

Do some online searching. I think you may find threads on various sites re "Cydesdale" size riders and the bikes they choose.

All I can say is that you should steer well away from lightweight wheels and frames. Unfortunately, in SA we have a rather limited range of bikes available.

If you are willing to spend a bit more, perhaps a custom steel frame and some super strong wheels would be a good option.

Hartail Steel Frame. Thicker tyres and make sure the wheels have at least 36 spokes, better if you have custom wheels built. And then you can also go the Fat Bike route.

May I suggest the Silverback Slade range.. It's 27.5. I have the Slade 3 and so far it's surviving. But I mostly ride gravel roads and jeeptrack. Only had two spokes come loose last year and I weight almost as much as you.

look at the GT range, im 6.6ft 154kg and i have  the GT zaskar sport, the frame and standard alex rims have held my weight just fine for nearly a year now, and i ride at least 4 times a week,

you can get a GT for about 12k, with an air fork and 2x10

after that you can buy a set of fulcrum red power wheels for around 4k...

Oh yes! Plus GT's are awesome!

Steel - Cotic or Niner is a good place to start. Perhaps a Niner ROS9? If you go for enduro type rims and tyres, enduro bars and stem, 200mm rotors you should be ok. With a budget of 15k, it would have to be mostly 2nd hand, though.

Welcome to the hub !!

Do yourself a favour and contact (phone) David Mercer of Mercer Bikes http://mercerbikes.co.za/.

He is a bike builder (and top quality)(have no idea about costs) and just chat to him about which way to go. He will give you great advice and no you don't have to buy one of his bikes. He's one of those people who just love to help others. Watch out you need a bit of time when you chat to him.

He will know all the ins and outs and what you need to consider.

Good luck.

Would give you advice but this needs a bit more than I can give.

I started on a Merida XT, four year ago at 120kg's.  In six months I was down to 85kg's and unfortunately still at 85kg's.  I had no issues with the Merida.  Only upgraded as I started to do stage races the same year. When I bought the Merida, my budget was also R 15k, I was able to buy the bike and all the kit, but that was 4 year ago. Good luck with your venture or adventure!

How tall are you? I know of someone that has a medium On One frame for sale. That would be a good place to start.

Have some 36h wheels custom built and put a new drivetrain and secondhand fork on there and you have a new-ish bike.

Thanks for all the replies guys. After looking around I see i can get a pretty good deal on a Momsen AL429 (R12500) or AL529 (R15000) brand new. Both are equipped with Alex/Momsen DP21 Custom, Tubeless Ready, 32H rims. Any idea if those would be adequate?

I am 1.73m tall and should be a medium frame size.

Will definitely give him call and see If he can provide some insight. His bikes look wicked but the price of the frame alone made my eyes water lol
