Trail Bike Recommendations

Being "dead set" on a wheel size is not recommended when in this market.

I agree, when I bought my Scott I was told that 29" is the be-all and end-all and everything else is a waste of time, and I can say without a doubt that I find the 27.5" infinitely better for the type of riding that I do.

But lets take a brisk walk past that topic or this thread might quickly take a turn for the worst and become another wheel size debate :P I'll wave the white flag by saying "To each his/her own" :D

Those Pyga's are nice, but did you see the entry level prices on them?

They start at R78k

Worth the money.... it is very comparably priced to similar specced machines from all the big brands

I was more referring to what the_bob said in his initial post. (he referred to the Jeffsy as too expensive and the Pyga's are more)

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Pyga's!

I just expected now that they on a direct sales that would be cheaper than other big companies.

It's not really a direct sale model because the dealer is involved for the build and setup - and does get a sales commission too - just means the dealer does not have the cost of holding stock to sell - all the dealer has to hold is demo machines for test purposes.

Given the financial state of a lot of bike shops, this is probably a good thing for them.

I see very few people actually read the OP's full post, specifically with regards to budget.

OP, seeing you loved the EX5 so much, have you test ridden a size 19.5? I'm about your height, and on a 19.5, and feel very comfortable on it.

I hear you on the specs regarding the EX5, but consider there are might still some 2017 models on special, and I see This Way Out were having a closing down sale with 2018 EX5 going for about R24k from what I remember. That leaves you with R16k to do some serious upgrades on the bike, to your spec (even more if you sell the parts you replace).

That was my point Piston. I just edited my post regarding the financial consideration.

OP, do plan on a new or a used bike?

I just went to the Trek page and the 2018 was retailing there for 30k

they dont show the EX5 2017 model available. If you want to and can, they do offer the EX8 for 40k (its an amazing bike)

Ja, the EX5 does go for R30k new on the Trek page, but there might still be some specials on the 2017 for about R23k. Try look for the specials that This Way Out was having on there closing down specials (I think it was on their Facebook page), where they had the 2018 model for R23-24K.

Cool, but just in case, my point wasn't directed at you  :)

So, a contact of mine has found me a BMC Speedfox full carbon 150mm with a Pike fork, Cane Creek shock, Sram X0. Brand new, but 2015 model never been used. Within budget. I think I have a winner

Just buy a Pyga and thank me later ;)

And it does not have to be a R90k Pyga ....

Speak to Louise at Knipe_Racing.  You buy the Pyga frame, decent set of wheel (not super expensive), SRAM Eagle GX, good suspension, etc .... you end up with a very good spec, though not the lightest, but at a VERY affordable price tag !!

Frankly the value for money of this build FAR exceed anything I have seen in any shop !!  By going for the "GX" instead of the XX1, you get full functionality, for a substantial financial saving.  You do this with the various components and the end result is just SO much better.
