I accept that leaving your door open into the road is a mistake. Carving through a small gap between that person and the open car door at speed is also a mistake. Based on the explanation given it sounds like there might have been enough warning to slow down or stop and avoid the accident altogether (I base that on there being enough time for the car to stop, the person to get out and to get away from the car with camera in hand) so the blame game is probably a bit excessive - especially the comment that we can only hope the woman was injured in the collision ("Bikebloke" should go and live somewhere else if that is how he thinks).

Just my opinion - an accident always sucks but in this case it appears to me to just be a whole combination of bad luck and bad decisions following a fairly simple mistake (leaving the door open).

We weren't there and don't have all the facts so maybe don't jump to conclusions (I know this is the hub but it is only Wednesday!).

Well done to whoever looked after Ian following his injuries though (I think that was actually the point of the opening post)!

Option left: Colliding with a parked car and/or flying over the low stone wall into the frigid            Atlantic = certain death

Option right: Colliding with oncoming traffic = certain death (or life changing permanent injuries)

Therefore the only option had was to go through the available gap.

Describing the incident in detail doesn't mean it unfolded at the same speed in time. I had less then 2 seconds to decide and take evasive action before I was upon her.

Yanking on the brakes would've had the same results as Option left or Option right.

Trust me I took the only available action available to me in the moment.

However you are spot on in pointing out that my post is more about expressing gratitude to whoever it was that assisted me.

Not saying the driver didn't leave the scene, but maybe given the concussion, the person in the car didn't actually leave, and helped both Ian and the woman to the hospital? Maybe check with the hospital to see if someone checked you in under their name?

I did check at the hospital as well and so did the folks who came to collect me upon discharge without success.

One could also assume that it was the other party who called the emergency services and upon arrival of the ambulance left with their injured person to a hospital at the same time.

Or perhaps they called E services and once other road users had stopped and agreed to wait with me then departed for a hospital themselves.

As said before, I have no recollection but merely stated that Paramedics had said they were unaware of another injured person on the scene.

Doesn't the driver realise that the crappy photo her phone takes is no where near as good as something she can get off google. To risk multiple lives just for a photo she will instantly gooi on FB(probably while driving) is just so silly. Darwin award.

OP, Glad you ok. Hows the bike? I hope you find your hero.

Thanks, miraculously my bike is 100%

The driver of the car has an obligation to have reported the incident to SAPS if not they left the scene of an accident in which they were involved illegally which comes down to the same as a hit and run.  Think about it.

To OP  - who is paying your medical bills?

I would not leave this as is.

Okay, so what should OP do then? He has made it abundantly clear that he has no details of the woman or the car's registration number. So what do you suggest? Lay a charge? Against who? Claim from the road accident fund? You need statements from all involved, and then where does OP begin to collect them?

I get the sentiment, but what is realistic to the situation?

I am speaking from a position of experience, after having a car jump a stop, resulting in me doing an endo into the tar head first at 40kph. All I remember is the oke saying he was going to call my wife, and after I regained consciousness again from my concussion due to the fall, the perpetrator was AWOL. All I know is he drove a Volvo. I raged for days, and suffered all sorts of problems, least of which was a sprained wrist, fractured elbow and mild concussion. But take it further? How? So, I chose to let bygones be bygones, and now I am much more alert on the bike. Also, since that day, I flat out refuse to listen to music while riding. Lesson learnt.

I was descending a section of Chappies at a rapid pace when a car (new model, metallic bronze, E-Class Merc) ahead of me stopped suddenly, car door flung open (and left open protruding into the road) an occupant ran into the middle of the road with cellphone aloft to take a picture of the view.

This left me a narrow gap to thread between her and the car door so I shouted at her to announce my rapidly oncoming presence.

She became aware of me at the last second, panicked and tried to run for the car effectively closing the gap and I collided with her.

That was my last recollection before the lights went out. Ambulance ride to Constantiaberg, discharged later that night

Thankfully nothing broken except for a Kask Mojito, which did its job. Multiple lacerations on face (no stitches) and a collection of roasties on lower back, one shoulder, both elbows, both knees and knuckles.

Still suffering the effects of the concussion and whiplash which feels worse then the road rash, cuts and bruises etc.

According to the paramedics, they were unaware of any other persons being injured upon their arrival so I assume the Merc and its occupants had already left the scene with their injured party.

As stated in my original post, I'm extremely grateful to whoever assisted me.

You know you made contact, the occupant must be injured as well.

How the F------ do you just leave someone there injured and leave???

The world is a messed up place!

I haven't been following this thread so excuse me if this has been mentioned.

Doesn't Chappies have cameras at the entrance and exit? Surely if a criminal incident occurred (Which as mentioned, a hit and run is), camera footage can be checked?
