Mtb pedals/cleats on road bike - positioning same as road cleats?

For various reasons, I'm needing to put my MTB pedals on my road bike. I have, what I believe, to be an optimal cleat position for my road shoe setup. My thinking is that when putting my MTB pedals on, I should (could) replicate the positioning as close as possible?

Measure what part of your foot is directly above the pedal axle with the road shoes and replicate that position with the mtb shoes.

Don't see why you wouldn't be able to replicate the cleat position, stack height might be a bit different. I've done many, many thousands of kays on the road with mtb pedals, it's completely fine.

What PeterF said

I have been riding with mtb shoes and pedals (Time ATAC) on my road bike for about 6 years now because i need my cleats positioned further back than what normal road shoes will allow.

a bit of reading, a bit of allen-keying and a bit of grease and I'm sorted. Original cleat position was waaaaay too far forward. Seems that rearward cleats engage large muscles and your pedal stroke uses less calf-action, so less fatigue.

But a small note on the difference between my carbon-sole road shoes vs nylon/reinforced sole on my mtb shoes is HUGE... can definitely feel the flexing of the sole, and perhaps moving the cleats forward a smidge may be a good idea as my left big toe got a bit ache-y
