so based on this thread around 90% of kids cant change gear with the twist grip, so WTF do they put them on kids bikes ? And its not just the cheap ones either, all the 20" bikes I looked at for my daughter had the twist grip, ranging from cheap ones to rather pricey (for a kids bike) bikes.

Was at a bike shop this afternoon - getting a new helmet for Maritz.

Spoke to the owner ... NOPE, not triggers for kids ..... NOT in the "cheap" bikes .... apparently a R7k KIDS bike that comes with trigger shifters.

O-well, will be placing my order with EVOBIKES on Friday.  Three options to chose from, R250 is the most expensive option - bottom mounted trigger, separate from the brake lever.

The top mounted unit is cheaper, so is the unit that combines the bottom mounted trigger and the brake lever .... prefer to keep the bike looking standard, ie left and right side brake levers the same.  Ja, okay, I am particular about stuff like that ...  :whistling:

will give feedback as soon as it is fitted.

PS - I have told Naas that half the Hub is getting ready to order

Same reason as the cables aren't lined - cos it's cheaper. Not much room for frills on something that retails for R 1 500.

Just as a side note.  Most bike shops only stock certain brands.  Thus they won't go out of their way to source a bike from another brand that might have the correct requirements you want.

There are 24" bikes that comes out standard with triggers.

Hahhahahah.

Try again.

R3-R5k for a 24" kid bike.

I got lucky with "old" stock at R2500

Clearly I don't have a kid...

My point stands though, still not much room for R 200 worth of cables and R 250 worth of shifter.

And if you really want a fright on a 24" bike, check out the Transition Ripcord...

R 4 200 for a 20'' Momsen..... with grip-shift ....

by all means .. add R500 and give me a bike that WORKS ....  Costing me a LOT more in time and effort to sort it out.

Worse - the knock to his confidence each time he struggles to shift the gears !

eggsackery, R5k for a specialized 20”

Even at the 3k mark that we paid for my daughters bike, swap out the twist grip for a trigger from the start and suddenly it’s not R250 for a trigger but R50

my sons got the 20” momsen as well. The blue one, coz he’s a Tottenham Hotspur supporter ????

Think I will contact evo to get a normal trigger shifter ?

As a matter of interest did you change the cable on the grip shifter ?

My Friday was HECTIC, so did not get to speak to Naas .....

Hope to sort it out in the coming week.

No, I did not change the cable .. not yet.  If Naas can get the shifter for R250 it is not worth the hassle ....

In Hermanus for the weekend, spoke to the guys at Eudia cycles.  They recon I should be looking at a 7 speed shifter and possibly upgrading the cluster at the back as well.  Which would give Maritz more of a granny for the longer climbs at Meerendal .... Think I need to go have a chat with Naas about what he can get ....

Update ....

Seems there was some miscommunication .... Evobikes got the "combined unit" which has both the gear shifters and break lever .....

black break lever on the one side with a silver break lever on the other side ..... for my own sanity I declined.

Will try again to speak to Naas and to get a "gear shifters only" unit.

For those that want a 6 speed gear shifter with integrated break lever, right hand side .... Evobike has two of these in stock.  (No, I did not ask the price)

Various bikes shops have (or can get) this for you :

The SunRace "Pair, R7/L3" set -

Bit of a waste, as I will only ever use the rear shifter ....

I also got some new quality outer cable.  Cut to length, then reamed at the ends to ensure smooth operation -

Threaded the cable, checked the rear derailure limit-setting, attached the cable, and checked the operation of the gear selectors.

Had to replace the grips ... perfect opportunity to colour match the rest of the bike ....

Should have seen his face when the penny dropped that changing the gears affect the speed ..... cant wait for our ride tomorrow.

one more kid saved from a grip-shift ...

Chris, can you please elaborate a bit for us on how this works?

I see the shifter is a 7 speed, but the casette is a 6 speed. My understanding is that the indexing will be out unless the spacing between the 6 and 7 speed casettes are the same, i.e. the latter being physically bigger.
