Dodgy Garmin

Hi all.

I am in need of advice on how to deal with the the following issue:

Around 20 December I responded to an ad for a Garmin 510 on The Hub. I informed the seller (based in Stellenbosch) that I would be be in Cape Town in a few days time for a week, so if it was OK I would pay a deposit immediately and settle the balance upon collection of the item. The seller informed me that he was in urgent need of the cash so requested I pay the full amount to reserve the item, which I did. The seller asked if it was OK that I pick up the item from a coded postbox at a designated location. I said that I wasn't comfortable with this and asked that I collect from him personally if it was at all possible. As he hadn't planned to be away from home for an extended time over this period, he agreed that this should be OK. When I arrived in CPT I contacted the seller and said that I would collect at his convenience. The seller replied that he was going to be at the coast for a few days, so it would be easier if just collected from his domestic worker. I agreed. ..

Upon collection, I switched the unit on. Everything seemed fine and it picked up signal quite easily (my first time using one of these). As I didn't have my bike with me, I thought I'd just wait till I was back home in Joburg to try it out. About two weeks later I was rather dismayed when I tried to set up the unit. It became apparent that the touch screen was malfunctioning : it would either not respond or respond incorrectly! I was miffed to say the least. I immediately contacted the seller and informed him of my findings. I also requested a full refund and that I would return the unit to him. The seller claimed that he hadn't had any issues with the unit, but was quick to suggest that I should "just take it to Garmin". Needless to say, that to date, I have not received the refund, and the unit is still in my possession.

As I am now not sure how to resolve this matter, I'd appreciate some input on the issue please. I'm quite upset that I've been apparently taken for a different type of ride!

Thank you.

Thank you.

Unfortunately you have as you say been taken for a ride....if your return the unit to Garmin and explain the fault that has developed they "normally" offer you a very good deal to take the next model ....which would probably be the 520.....so you may end up with a device that is more superior for a fraction of the cost new....sorry you have had this experience....not Lekker at all.

Sent it to Garmin JHB for a replacement unit.

Go to a Garmin dealer (with your unit) and explain your issues with the unit.

They will process the issue and ship it to Garmin.

You won't need any original packaging or POP. The fee for shipping and handling will be R200.

Sadly, the waiting process is quite hectic (6 - 8 weeks). But you will get a superior unit for a fraction of the price, so it is worth the wait.

Good luck and sorry for the poor experience with the seller. I hope you give him/her a bad rating for selling a faulty unit to you.

As suggested you could take it to Garmin, pay in a bit get and get an upgrade, depending on what you paid and what Garmin want you to pay in you could also end up paying more than the price of a new one.

December ..........January (malfunction) .......... February.......... March(Post)?

I am not sticking up for the seller, but it's an electronic device and could probably malfunction at any time without notice. It's just called an unlucky buy. It's the gamble buying these things second hand as apposed to new. I've had my Garmin just freeze on me for no reason, it happens, master reset, as above,

Lucky Garmin will probably not ask for proof of payment and just sort the issue out, that is your best bet.

Win some, Loose some.

Thank you guys for all the input. Much appreciated. I will try to do the reset and see what happens. Failing which I will go to Garmin. Seems like you got to have your guard up even on the Hub. Cheers
