Vertical Bike Hanger

Hello All

I have purchased the Holdfast Vertical Bike Hanger for my new bike room. I would like to know from those who have also used a vertical hanger, if, when the bike is attached, does the bottom wheel touch the floor or does it need to be off the floor.

I ask for 2 reasons:

1. Which option places less stress on the rim/hangar/wall?

2. Which option allows the easiest placement/removal of the bike?

It will be great to have some comments before I start drilling.

Thanks

Simon

Well since all bikes are not eaqual in wheelbase length the question is moot - because only one bike at most can touch the ground while hung up - that would be the one with longest wheelbase.

Even with all of them not touching the ground, it's not going to place much strain on the rims or wall. Just make sure you anchor the rack to the wall using anchors thay can handle the weight. Also make sure when hanging the bikes that there is no pressure on the nipples (ie: just make sure the spokes and nipples are not touching the hooks).

Will also be easiest to hang up and remove the bike if the bottom wheel is not touching the ground - allows for up and down movement.

usually the bikes rear wheel is off the floor with those - You will find it hard to put up any other way for more than 1 bike - unless the are identical bikes.

Just.dont mount them too high - bikes are heavy when over your head - takes a certain amount of fine aim and strength to rack them on those - harder the higher the rack is.

Thanks V12man. The bicycles on the 4 hook bike hanger are all 26". I'll have to confirm later if the wheelbase is the same. It should be pretty close.

I'll hang them about 3" off the ground

Thanks Grease_Monkey.

I'll measure the wheelbase and take it from there. I probably mount the hangar so that the rear wheel is  3" off the ground

Hang them a bit higher than that, Simon. Just to allow for future bike purchases which may have a longer wheelbase.

Thanks Myles. I didn't mention it, but I actually have a separate hangar for my 29r. But maybe you're correct. I could possibly mount all the hangars at the same height so I don't have to worry about future purchases or which hangar fits which bike.

Put it hig enough for 29" bikes.... you will get there in the end.... :)

I live in a very old house and have discovered that our walls aren't strong enough to hold a bike. Even an 8mm rawl bolt eventually pulls out the wall.

So the next time I put up bike hooks I'm going to make a MacGafter that allows vertical adjustment so that I can let the weight of the bike rest on the floor via the back wheel.

Bricks. Thank goodness they don't make them like they used to.

I use a floor pvc rack which I also use on the back of the bakkie. Takes 5 bikes and very easy to use
