Paint discolouration

Pulled off my chain stay guard and noticed the paint was discoloured underneath obviously from the constant moisture of the inside of it not drying.

So this is a bit of a warning to everyone with one on, make sure you take it off and let it dry properly before putting it back on.

Has anyone had this happen and have any solution to fix it or is the only option to repaint?

It’s got progressively worse since I’ve left it off. c3cfa984392cfe987c65c7672fa3fbb0.jpg

What kind of chain stay guard do you use? Sometimes dust get in between guard and frame and it lightly rubs the paint. Same with saddle and frame bags.

It may also be a detergent that's been used during washing and not been properly rinsed out... Water shouldn't have the drastic an effect on its own, however, most detergents are thickened using salt....

To repair? Try some polish first and see if that helps, otherwise just wrap it properly with a tube and hide it till you wanna test yourself to a respray

I just use a basic spray wash on the bike and always ensure everything is rinsed properly. Just weird how when I first took it off it was only slight discolouration and it’s got progressively worse.

Guess it’s time to save up for a respray ????

At all costs avoid the gross social disfigurement of a discoloured chainstay ????

I’ve seen that more than once, I suspect it may be due to “off-gassing” from the neoprene or the velcro affecting the paint.

Can any paint/chemical boffins shed more light on this ?

That is very weird.

Maybe send a photo to Trek to make them aware. It might be a paint issue.

If it was me, I'd just wrap the chain stay with a tube to act as a slap sock and to hide that. I used to take pride in how nearly I wrapped my chainstays, but the advent of clutch derailleurs and cheap velcro guards mean that I haven't done so in a while.

That reminds me, I've been running tubeless for so long I don't have a stash of discarded tubes in my workshop anymore.

Email to trek says:

Paint discoloured, never had a chain stay protector on the bike, must be a defective frame, obviously very dangerous, life threatening probably.

Please can you replace bike with a 2018 model as soon as possible.

All the best

Dean.

(This would be my strategy, you can even use my letter.)

Will notify them. Going to try let it air for a bit longer before putting anything back over it.

I should just wait for the 2019 bikes to get released so then it doesn’t seem so bad asking for a 2018 one ????

Jokes aside, I bought the bike second hand here on the hub. Already tried to do a warranty claim due to a pivot bolt snapping mid-ride and they kindly turned it down due to seeing it being sold and bought on the hub, even though I had been given the original invoice so highly doubt they going to be of much assistance here, for free. But will still notify them either way.
