More bad news for everyone... A local staying in the area also riding has warned that the section from Thornville and Tekwani Sawmills, right up to Camperdown is riddled with massive potholes and there is no clear line through so everyone will be forced to take evasive action. Watch yourselves and others as we dont want any accidents.

Apparently it was paid to be repaired but the repairs did not get done. This last piece of info came from a race route official.

now we not just fighting the weather but bad road conditions also. *forgot to pack winter kit as it did not compute going to Kzn in October and have kit for cooler conditions...

Good luck everyone!!!

I have no idea where that is on the route, can somebody please give us an indication of where that is in kilometers from the start, +-5km is good enough for me.

Basically the top of Fox Hill (12-15km into the race) as you turn left. Dodgy stretch runs for another ~15km.

That WIND! YOH!

Again a brilliantly organized race, I'll be back next year.

Cramped at the end, clearly my nutrition plan didn't work out well. Finished 5min slower than my first one last year.

I want to gage how much wind impacted us today in terms of finish time, so please humor me.

I know there are a meriad of things that impact finish times between two years, so wind alone can't account for the difference, but it would be interesting.

I'll go first

2017: 2h58

2018: 3h03

i went faster than previous years but thats due to me being in better shape. So I would just scew the results. 2016 was 2:58, 2017 DNF, 2018 2:46 roughly. recon it would have been 2:35 maybe if no wind.

Potholes not as bad as my sources was saying either... blerry locals... hhehehehe

Wind was not too hectic and I was again surprised how the 60mm wheels handled. I was going to fit an older zipp 303 but it spoilt the look of the bike and the 60s was just too sexy which is the only thing that matters right?

But, what I can say is that the cycle tour we had coming down was second to none. As we passed some of the other groups cycling down, the stronger riders decided it was go time, so we caught everyone in sight!

Day 1 - Cool weather, fortunately flat.

Day 2 - Warmer weather, even flatter and much faster    . Oh, and even a police escort into Ladysmith!! We believe he mistook us for another bunch riding into town.

Day 3 - Bacon Hill, Warthog Hill, in a killer cross wind (Frosty was putting out 320W, going at 8kph). But a SWEET downhill section coming into Howick. Reminded me of the infamous LeTapé 2016.

Day 4 - 2 riders finishing in sub-3, in weather which the announcer kept referring to as PE weather.

I hope to come back next year, and pray to the weather gods to just for one day keep the wind away.

Didn't end up riding the Shova today, didn't even do a late entry on Friday as I wasn't in the mood to ride in the wind and cold. Chilled in bed until 07:30 this morning.

My time in 2012 was just over 4h20, no wheel sucking and no riding in a peloton, and not too much training. So going to make next year my next "big" road cycling year, or I might get back into mtb as there's hardly any wheel sucking BS on the trails [emoji51]

Most importantly, I finished upright, with a smile on the face, ready to ride/run another day - tomorrow.

Today goes down as the hardest/toughest club tour I've completed, as well as the hardest (Amashova) race I've had to endure - even the 2014 tandem ride (which was slower than today). Was happy to just finish, albeit I wanted to do it as quickly as possible, but knew that I simply didn't have the legs to stay with my start group. This 365-challenge has made it hard to train properly, and that's my excuse.

The roads weren't bad, but they certainly reflect the state of ......... [insert your own comment here] that we currently see in SA.

Well done to the organisers, another year ticked off and another year to plan ahead for 2019.

Front of AL was attack attack attack to get a smaller and smaller group and to drop any sprinters I finished just off the back at 2:48:22 according to Racetec. Had a hard but awesome race. Love Shova!

I finished in the AL front group. 2:47:something. Couldn't get rid of enough of the sprinters! There were a few heavies left for the run in to the line
