Thorny issue

My wife and I went riding a few weeks back and during the ride, she hit her finger on a thornbush - don’t know what kind though. It struck her on the knuckle of the left hand pinky.

Her finger stayed painful and swollen.

Eventually she did go see a doc and the diagnosis? An operation. 3 - 6 weeks out.

Seems like a piece of the thorn broke off inside the finger joint - eventhough at the time of the incident it just looked like a small needle prick would.

She is not in a happy place as you can imagine.

Has anyone ever experienced this?

I hope you got angry and Hulk Smashed the bush into the ground so it doesn't happen to anyone else......

Some plants and bushes carry toxins, either their own or bird poop etc... If it gets into the blood or the tissue people react differently. Extremities are especially difficult as a fair amount of women have bad blood flow in their hands/feet, allowing the toxin to fester and infect instead of getting flushed.

Some anti biotics and monitoring should sort it out. Hopefully it doesn't start smelling like almonds or start to change the hue of her skin.

She did do the antibiotics thing. Obviously did not work.

In Rooiberg years ago I had a thorn break off an inch into my thigh just behind my right knee.

That was during racing on Day 1. By the end of Day 2 it was swollen and hot so I got the medic to dig it out with scalpel and needle. I still have a nice purple scar.

Be careful of thorns!

If in joint, it's just pure bad luck I think.

Had many scratches / pokes from thorny trees on trails across SA and beyond.

All part of MTBing.

My laaitie went cycling with a friend the other day and a thorn got stuck into the inside of his calf and broke off at an angle. The doc only got some of it out (thinking that was it). But the wound stayed inflamed. Two weeks later out popped another 2cm of thorn!

I went into a thorn bush once and got off second best. Most of the wounds healed within a week or so, but this one on the top of my wrist did not want to get better. After at least 3 weeks I squeezed it the one day and a piece of thorn about 10mm long popped out. Fortunately I did not have to go for an opp so looks like I was still lucky.

This happened to me and I flat-lined during the op, I came very close to death. Life is very fragile.

Hmm. You remind me of someone.
