Nic White's response

Well, the topic has changed somewhat, but I find it quite refreshing to read a sane debate.

Personally, I dont think its acceptable for anyone in a management position to behave in a manner which appears to be Mr Ryders style.

It sounds to me like he has some serious anger management issues he needs to resolve.

I think everyone is allowed a temper tantrum on rare occassions, but once it becomes the norm it needs to be stemmed as it becomes quite unacceptable to most sane people.

Some people make the point that management in soccer, shout from the sidelines or a team manager screams from the car, fair enough but there is a subtle differance here, - its one thing to shout encouragement / advice from the sidelines, its quite another to vent your anger on an employee (athlete) out of competition in a personal capacity or manner.

Hi Shamus

Who ever wrote this stuff doesn't have many facts' date=' and must be a bit of an idiot.

there is a potential sponsor that Malcolm has secured, and not one of Doug's for that matter, as with who may go or not, there is no establishment of that yet,

So i would not take this to heart,

And wouldn't it be better if there were more teams to fill the pool in SA?

I don't think that MTN would disappear if a rider or two went to another team. But it would certainly increase the interest in how that racing pans out - don't you think?

Cheers,

Nic

Topic: Lange Stabs Douglas Ryder in the back !!!!!!!!!!

    Posted: Today at 11:58am

After saving the Malcolm Lange Sinking ship a few years ago, Malcolm has done the unthinkable by stabbing Douglas Ryder in the back.

When Malcolm was removed from the HSBC cycling team for personal reasons, Douglas came to the rescue and offered him a ride on his team. Malcom took it with open arms and proved to be a valuable signing. With malcolm on the team Doug managed to secure big sponsors and build a strong team.

Now the tides have turned. Malcolm has infact started his own team with some of Dougs Sponsors, which may cause the colapse of MTN cycling team. To add salt to the wounds, Nic the Prick and Ian are going with. Now bearing in mind, Nic and his buddies knew about the demise of HSBC way before the rest of his team did and secured his own future with MTN before the announcement was made.

So, ten years down the line what can the local cycling scene in South Africa say about the established riders. Are they still the scheming bunch they were a few years back. Is it still a case of "I am ok Jack, Skrew you". I think so.

So, as to all the psychophantic cheerleading about Malcolm Lange and his 380 odd wins, what are the critics going to say? Mind you, try and have a conversation with either Nic or Mal and you can see why the two of them need to carry on riding their bikes.

Flicking your saviour like that makes me wondor just how hard it would be for them to put a needle in the vein.

Porky
I need to get my post count up so that I can get out of Rookie status - so I will engage for a while!

You seem to think that support for Doug is a support for a robust management style. Nonsense' date=' I just said that he achieves what is desired by his sponsor - publicity. It is a matter of context!

There are thousands of books on Leadership style that propagate exactly what you say but there are also thousands of practical examples where the opposite has been successful.

Doug would not manage a team of IT consultants (I understand that is his background) in that manner - they would walk out.
Cyclists are a different breed and do not for one minute think they do not give back when the mechanic does not change a wheel quick enough after a puncture etc.

Big%20smile - No problem, we can engage for hours about this, probably never come up with a solution or suggestion but hey........I dont have much else to do right now.!

So, Nic's res[ponse about not having all the facts is not true.

Malcolm has started a new team. He is leaving. And Nic and Neil are going with.

Why doesn't Nic just tell the truth. Oh, because that takes balls.

I am not taking sides but why on earth should he / she.??

99.9% of posters here (me included) do not reveal names and contact details, why should he be differant??

Maybe, he prefers not to get irate and indignant calls all day or have his personal e-mail box filled with nonsense, or perhaps he just dosnt want his name and info public. Whats wrong with that.?

Anyway, who cares who Banji is, dos it make a differance to the quality or truth of the post.??

Well - Manners I suppose.  You don't go make making sweeping statements about people - be it true or false - unless you are prepared to answer for your actions.

I also dont think Banji should have to reveal who they are.... makes for some interesting reading. What difference does it make who they are..... so we can all c**p on them if we know them?

Heck, most IT consultants ARE cyclists.  It seems to be an IT disease!  The only difference is that cycling is a pretty competitive environment where there is a huge supply and a pretty small Elite demand.  That causes a skewed relationship where most team principles get away with heavy handed old style managment by fear.  It's not because cyclists like to be managed like that.

Also remember that you learn by example, so if you get shouted at to perform you are likely to learn that to get a wheel from a mechanic you have to shout for it.  Also, when you then move into management, guess what style you'll have?

Let's hope the guys who break away from MTN can learn how not to manage, though it would be difficult to act different if that is all that they have come to know....
