Money No object: We are One https://we-are-one-composites.odoo.com/page/home - made n tested in Whistler and  have BCXC rims, Enduro rims and DH rims or blow the budget on Enve.

I have just brought in a pair of Insider rims in 27.5" size from We Are One Composites. What sold me is the lifetime crash warranty, and also they do no finishing on their rims. You get it as it comes out of the mould so there can be no sanding and painting to hide imperfections. Each rim weighed exactly 398g on my scale and they claim 400g so pretty darn accurate.

Why I did not go csixx is because they dropped the 2 year free crash replacement on their 9 series rims, you only get 50% off for 5 years, and the 6 series are heavier that do come with a 2 year free crash replacement. South Industries also only offer 50% off for 2 years.

Nicholas has my rims now and is going to lace them up for me

A bit over budget and I'm no spez fan, but I have Roval controls on one bike and the roval SL's on the other - they are fantastic and the rovals are now on their 3rd bike of mine - and to boot, I bought them second hand and their previous owner was Eric Kleynhans so I'm guessing life before me was tough and fast.........but there are plenty of other options

Awesome. They have been on my wish list since I first heard about them and saw how much they back themselves. There is a great podcast with the founder on Downtime Podcast this week.

Throw out a review when they are done and ridden. Would love to hear how they go.

Some good advice there, hellocolour. Thanks.

You're absolutely right that the wheels will have to withstand a great deal of beating from rocks, etc! People tend to think that the whole of Namibia is covered in sand, but here in Windhoek we've got some really gnarly trails!

Check it out:  https://www.farmwindhoek.com/

For sure, got an uncle that lives just out of town and just getting to his place you need a car of note and it's a rock garden all of it's own. He rides a lot and has taken me out a fair bit and there are some great trails about. It's ruff n tuff in a lot of places and the last thing you want is your kit failing and having to walk that rig out.

I don't mind doing so but my point of reference is Giant Trance i23 el-cheapo rims so comparing to that it's bound to come out way better.

I'm seriously considering putting a foamo in the back wheel. I have knocked out around 10 dents from my back ally rim already, and even though the manufacturer is confident enough to offer a lifetime warranty on the carbon hoops it's not enough to convince me that I won't land up cracking it on a rock... Only thing is it then negates the weight savings...

Hi, maybe some ideas for consideration.

Your old Crests are super skinny alloy sections. I would not get close to them for me (85kg). If you are not a very light or very gentle rider I am not surprised they broke under you.

I had the AC White Lightnings. Light, nice wheels but I banged to pieces in less than 2 years.

Then I laced CSIXX marathon rims onto AC hubs. Very very nice wheel set. Very strong. I abused them properly and they smiled at it. After Epic and some more still (almost) looking like new. But with 1650gr not light. I had to move on to Boost now so needed to pass them on.

I decided to try out Nextie.

I bought my 'dream' hub set, the Syntace Straight MX Boost hubs. Fast 45t star ratchet, almost as light as the 240S but a bit cheaper. Self service friendly. Rims are the Nextie UL29/34mm (https://www.nextie.net/ultralight-mountain-clincher-34mm-NXT29UL34). The wheel set is weighing 1410gr (29er Boost) with 28No 1.5mm spokes. If you can rather use 32 spokes but my hubs only came in 28. I would call it an experiment because I don't know if they will last. But the weightsaving is achieved by use of T1000/T800 carbon and not so much with thinner sections. The bead lip is still 3mm thick. I am using them for rough trail riding on rocky Cape Town trails (Pats Track and the Glen type stuff). They have received a few rock strikes without damage so far. Bottom line, 3 months in I am happy and would buy them again.

If had the budget for that I would have looked at the South rims. I like the concept and the weight, and the local factor. But at twice the price unfortunately not affordable for me.

Good luck and have fun building your wheels!

The Nextie wheels that I described earlier were 1000US$ complete, plus shipping and local tax. You could drop some 200-300$ by using Hope Pro4 hubs. It would have been well within your budget before the current Rand value drop....

I'm looking at R10 000 - 15 000 (with an absolute max of R20 000).

PSS,1) it's Friday

2) we never mix cannondale and specialised on the same bike unless you're upgrading the Spaz to a Lefty
