Thatā€™s in pretty rough shape. From what I can make out of the tubing sticker it looks like it could be 501, a South African tubing and not Reynolds, at first glance they look the same.

With the paint damage, basic CoMo tubing and that basic group set with the mismatched wheels itā€™s not really worth restoring.

i think you will find 501 on the reynolds tubing charts its not fancy tubing but it is reynolds tubing.....

Ā

501 - Reynolds 501 was a chromium-molybdenum (CrMo) steel, seamed, butted 3-tubes tubeset that made its debut about 1983 and was available in two different thicknesses

Ā

its a nice old SA built bike they are all worth saving if you are attached to them (not financially worth it but thats up to you OP)

I'm going to start sanding down tonight. I'm thinking of going with a modern build in the frame. Going to leave the big nine rear and add a pxcr 1 front rim, I would like to fit this FSA gossamer crankset but don't know what I need to make it fit. I have shiny handle bar same style and a specialized (holder to hold bars ) I'm new to bicycles but have a passion for building so I call parts as I see them lol so just educate me. Next I'm going to put on s specialized saddle that I have. I might keep shifters as is . then I read something about the forks not being good facing out forward. So I will either use this other straight fork I have or this DT swiss carbon fibre front fork I think its a xrc 100 depending on if it looks good or not. If I can lay my hands on some 2nd hand unwanted old disk brakes I will do that to and finish it off with a unique candy paint job

i think you may start by getting someone who knows to check the frame is straight and sans cracks (and ask them about your plans)....then decide what next ......but hey dude its your bike ride it like you stole it :whistling:

Ā

dont sandpaper anything till you get some input first ..

Bikebloke thanx for the info . I only saw your reply after I replied. I don't want to butcher the bike if it should rather be saved. I am young but still respect keeping things in circulation if thats how it ought to be. Financially what would be a price I could attach to it as is. I do have its rear rim just no freewheel sprocket. If it should stay in circulation. I can either let it go to someone knowledgable. Even if I take a small loss or maybe I don't. I still think I got a bargain lol but I'm not experienced

its not worth much money wise...

- if you just checkĀ the frame isĀ straight and uncracked and replaced the missing 6 or 7 speed parts (with equivalent old parts which are cheap because they arent fancy) and cabled it and put on a period type saddle and tires and bar tape you would have a great old original 1980s SA built bike which had serious "patina" and a bit of scruffy attitude to ride around on ...very retro but still not worth a fortune

Ā

stick it in your boot one day and take it to Neels at woodstock cycle works and ask him if he has all the shitty old bits lying around to get it running ....he wont be happy... but ill bet he can help you for not much moneys

Ā

at worst you can check out Neels' shop which is very cool and decide not to fix it up .....and make another plan

Ā

good luck

Yes you are right, I typed without checking. 052 is the local tube set I was thinking about. Sorry about the misinformation.

Thanx for the excellent advice . sounds on point to me. If paid 700 for it . rookie mistake or bargain

Ā

R700 isn't bad at all. Get it functional and you could make a bit of cash. Or paint it and keep it.Ā
