Um, no. I am trying to, I don't want to lose the man points on a kid's bike...

Understandable.

If you want to save yourself, and you can't make it work, tell him that it needs a new cable and you can only get one from the bike shop. Take it with, watch them fit it.

Unfortunately those brakes have almost zero power, and there's not much you can do to fix it for little hands.

My advice?....take it to the bike shop...seriously.

Okay, I think that I'll do that then...

Ridgeway Cycles you say? What should the damage be (ball park)?

Is that the shop behind Spar at Stoneridge (Lower Level) - where those hectic speed bumps are?

No that's Ridgeway sports bar. they used to be there and you should go past there afterwards for beer anyway. They are in Greenstone Motor City, where the KFC is. If you google Ridgeway Cycles it will show you as well.

Hey y'all,

...From what I've gathered on this forum, it seems that Johnson's Cycle Works are not first choice...

Any recommendations?

Craig

I have been taking several kid bikes to Johnson's for decades. No issues. They have always fixed them perfectly and fast... and cheap - which seems to be important. Never had an issue. Just communicate.

Do not take my fancy bikes there - but that is not what you are looking for either.

Craig hang in there !!

As suggested, take the bike to a bike shop and ask them to show you how to clip the cable back in.

Then ask them to check the rim..... if the rim is even slightly out of true, then the brakes cant be set properly, making it virtually impossible to brake ....

It takes a minute or two to true the rim enough to set up the brakes as good as practical for these bikes.

PLEASE dont give up !!  I have seen people with ten thumbs catch on quickly when SHOWN the basics .... not everybody grows up in a garage ... hang in there.

It's a 2 min job. Unless the cable or something is stuffed and parts are needed, many bike shops won't charge you.

If you were in PE, I'd do it for you.

Hi everyone, just to let you all know that I came right. Took it to Johnson's, cost me all of 60 bucks and the brakes are much better... (although the training wheels now seem to be too straight - but that is an easy fix, even for me)...

thanks to everyone for the suggestions and help :)
