AaronVA Posted November 22, 2018 Share Hey everyone, I am looking to import a pair of mtb rims from CRC and was wondering about import duties. I have seen that components are 0% so was just wondering how to work out the final price? Just price x VAT or is there something that I am missing? Any help appreciated thanks
Schnavel Posted November 22, 2018 Share Take the purchase price, then add on the shipping. Add a 1.5% conversion fee (rand to pound). Then take this value, subtract shipping and then add 16,5% (this covers VAT and import taxes) to the value without shipping. Add back shipping and that is your final amount. As an example, if an item costs $100 and shipping is $20, first add in the conversion fee: 120*1.015 = 121.8 - 20 = 101.8 Then for VAT and taxes = 101.8*1.165 = 118.6 Add back shipping: 118.6+20= 138.6 Now convert to rand: $138.6 = R1910 roughly This is only for items such as components which don't attract any duty MORNE
MORNE Posted November 22, 2018 Share or if you dont want to go through all that just roughly say price paid excluding shipping at $100 +25%= $125 then convert. Puts you very close to actual number ($145 incl shipping) and it usually turns out to be a bit less at the end (as per Schnavels steps above). 25% worst case if you are sure everything you buy is duty free...ie no helmets, clothing, shoes etc. Disclaimer: CRC shipping with skynet via SAPO is a ball ache at the moment if you read the forums Edited November 22, 2018 by morneS555

Sbloomer Posted April 24, 2019 Share Just reviving this thread. Is there a limit to the number and cost of packages before you start attracting enough attention to need an import permit? And if this number is per year, is it per tax year or per calendar year

Ashchest Posted April 24, 2019 Share Does CRC offer alternative shipping options to SAPO? I remember many years ago I used to bring loads of components through SAPO and it was not a problem, but I would not go that route today.
