Shoes - what? where?

I got a call to say my replacement pair of XC7 had arrived...thought to myself while driving to collect them that it might be a good idea to collect them and unload them while they are still brand new...dont feel like the hassle of replacing them again.

so i arrived at the shop ...saw the box on the counter...with a very negative attitude...opened the box...looked across at Deno and said "these are not my shoes"...my shoes are XC7 ...shining bling plastic looking narrow front shoes...turned them over and saw the sole was the same...but in my confusion...must have sounded like an idiot...said again...these are not my XC7 shoes.

the shoes i sent away were didnt look anything like these shoes in the box...except the sole

I havent fitted the cleats yet...but i have tried them on...when you fit them...they just feel right..they are not tight in the front like the old ones...which hopefully means no more numbness.

the boa system is way smoother...in fact if you look at the XC7 and XC9 you wouldnt know the difference unless you look at little closer at others things...like there is more ventilation on the XC9 ..the sole is the same rock solid rubber as the old XC7.

I will update once i have worn them and tried them out.

Very cool, looking forward to the feedback - just the kind of 'motivation' I need to get the 2019 version! Where did you get them from btw?

I purchased the old XC7 last year ...they had an issue...so shimano replaced them...the replacement one had the same issue...so shimano replaced them again...but this time with the lasted 2019 XC7 ...just collected them this morning.

They look sweeeeet....i am pretty excited to try them out.

something to note...i did put a lot of consideration into the purchase of the old XC 7 ...taking into consideration that i ride both mtb and road...things like :

looks...you want them to look the part while being a roadie ...not a concern while riding the mtb...the old ones had a plastic bling look...the new ones ...I like.

sole stiffness...especially around the cleat area...being a heavy person...you want the platform to withstand the weight and pressure.

rubber sole ...was a winner hands down...especially for me who has to put my foot down often...for 2 reasons...firstly you dont slip on the rocks and secondly when you cant cleat straight away ...you get to put the middle of the shoe on the pedal/SPD or whatever you call it and it doesnt slip ...until you can clip back in.

the boa system...being able to lock down when you know you gona be putting the hammer down...or ease it up after long hours in the saddle...i just hope the new ones dont come loose like the old version ones did...i push and pull a lot on the pedal stroke.

when you stop and for a cuppa or breakfast etc...i wanted a shoe i could walk around in...one of the reasons i havent converted to road shoes...this way you get the best of both.

one flaw i have already noticed with the new XC7...they left the V in the tongue which means the leather strap is gona catch you...you will see the XC9 tongue is designed for the strap across the top.... i m hoping it will not be an issue...i normally wear a thick sock ...so it shouldnt be a problem...it might be if you wear a thin sock.

XC7 feedback

the fit...exactly the same as my old SHXC31 ...the front is not snug like the old XC7 ...in fact i changed from a thin sock to a much thicker sock because when i tightened the bottom boa it started to deform the front of the shoe...pulling down in the front...i put on a pair of thick socks...much better.

the only discomfort i experienced while walking around with them on...the top strap digs into the muscle which runs from your shin down to the top of your foot...it seems the designed engineer paid attention to everything else except this minor detail...which anyone who tries on this shoe is gona notice straight away...i do believe it will wear in as the leather stretches...i took the thin socks that i had on and slid them under the strap...much better...i cant understand why they would cut a V into the tongue and not do the same to the strap...i might just cut it myself (maybe not ...warranty will be gone) i might sacrifice the warranty for comfort...will see once i have ridden the bike with them on.

one of the things you will notice from the old XC7 ...when you walk they seem to have bent up the front of the sole...so when you walk... it rocks  and doesnt feel like your heal wants to pop out the back on every step...thumbs up for that.

something else i noticed ...the new boa cant do like the old one did ...adjustment to loosen...you cant loosen the boa by one or 2 clicks...you can tighten but you have to pop open the boa to loosen it.

The new Shimano range is off the charts
I have the mtb shoes and have ordered the road shoes (waiting for the black ones) ... very happy with them for fit and feel.

if you look at the RC901 ...you will see there is a cushioned piece above the strap which protects your leg from the strap...without that piece...it makes the XC7 very uncomfortable.

Really disappointed to see the issues with the strap. I have been using the previous XC7 version in the WIDE size and it has been very comfy. Initially these shoes also bothered me by digging into the top muscle that runs from the shin to the top of the foot, but after a while and using thick socks it is no longer an issue. I tried on just about every Specialized shoe and they were all uncomfortable, mostly by being too narrow. When I first saw the pics of the new XC701 shoes the first thing I noticed was the top strap and was worried it would do exactly what you are saying. I will be needing a new pair of shoes soonish, do you reckon cutting the top strap is do-able? There is no stitching or anything preventing that? It does not look like there is but pictures do not always reveal everything.

Have the new RC7 and XC7. Experienced same issue with the strap. Hopefully the mould with my foot and get more comfy. Im trying to look something in the meantime to help with comfort

all excited to try out my new shoes...i went and rode the circuits last night ...all i am gona say ...it was a good ride with good company...but the shoes...someone has messed up.

it seems they copied the XC9 but didnt pay attention to the most important detail...the strap across the top...if you look at the old and new XC7 the tongue has a V cut into it...on the old shoe it worked...i didnt have an issue with it...why...because the wire was lower than the V ...so when you lifted the front of your foot... the muscle went into the V ...with the new shoe ...they seem to have missed this detail.

when you fit the shoe if you leave the strap open and lift the front of your shoe...you will see the muscle lifts into the V...as soon as you close the strap it cuts into the muscle and you can no longer see the groove in the tongue....after 40 km last night...it was a relief to remove the shoe.

so what now...do i send the shoes back again and let shimano sort out the issue

or do i quickly unload the shoes before too many people become aware of this defect and rather just spend the extra cash and upgrade to the XC9 which you can see they have overcome this issue by having the cushion above the strap.

i am sure coolheat has someone monitoring these threads...maybe someone in the know could comment...maybe something i have done wrong...am being unreasonable?

put a sock under the strap it helps relieve the pressure...or i believe if you cut the strap  to at least 5 mm below the V it should relief the pressure....thats your warranty out the window.

Makes you wonder how they can put so much design into a shoe and overlook this very important issue? That strap will definitely cut into my foot. Seeing as this new shoe is a fail would you happen to know if the XC9 is brought in in a wide version like the XC7? I have looked around online but cannot find a wide version....

you will have to put in a special order in for the wide versions. But try both our first, I used the wide version shimano R171, and noticed the RC9 standard fits about the same.

the 2019 XC7 is much wider then the old XC7...there is plenty room in the front of the shoe....it is almost a copy of the XC9.

i see the older version XC7 and XC9 had a wide version....maybe they have addressed this problem.

if you look at both shoes together...the only difference you will notice...

- the vent holes look slightly bigger and more of them on the XC9.

- the heel has a solid piece up the back...the XC7 is soft..

- the cushion above the strap on the tongue on the XC9 ...nothing on the XC7

- the cushion on the back of the XC9 is grey ...black on the XC7

- vent hole in the inner sole in the XC9 non in the XC7 (I would replace this with a better         quality one)

there are so many good things to point out about the new XC7 shoe...they seem to have addressed all the problems and created a reasonably price really awesome shoe.

Thank's for listing the differences between the XC7 and XC9. The new XC7 also comes in a wide version. Evobikes has both the normal and wide for sale. The XC9 comes in a wide as well, but haven't seen either the old or the new version advertised in SA. Maybe just the regular XC9 would fit, but I have my doubts as I tried on many shoes and the wide Shimanos were the only ones wide enough.
