Garmin watch options - need advice

Have a look at the Garmin Instinct. Looks to be positioned between Fenix and Vivoactive.

Also a nice review by DC Rainmaker, as always.

This really looks like a very good an affordable option.

I must agree that I don't think I'm going to like the Casio watch face, but at half the price and very near to Fenix 5 features, it's a goodie.

Seems like the guys who have the Fenix 3 seem to be happy with the watch vs upgrading to Fenix 5... I'm sure I'll never even use half the features of these watches.

I don't seem to find a lot of places selling the Fenix 3 online anymore and if they are available, they seem to be almost the same price as the Fenix 5.

SAPPHIRE sounds like is a must, which neither the Forerunner 735XT or 935 seem to have.

Not a lot of feedback on either of those units thus far, which means it's maybe not that popular.

Ideally I'd want to get the HRM chest strap for cycling purposes, so I can mount the watch to my handlebars.

Currently I only run, cycle and go to the gym.

Cycling being the main focus ito HR, Distance, Speed, Elevation, etc...

I do the occasional swim.

I'm keen on doing some Xterra type events and maybe a half Iron Man at some point within the next year or 2. So I'm kind of hoping the watch will get me on my way to actively pursue this...

935 or Fenix 5, same watch just a different casing.

I had the Fenix 3, now have the Fenix 5

So you can recommend the 935?

I'm really keen on HRM strap and the 935 performance bundle is way cheaper than the Fenix 5 performance bundle

Do you know if theres any major differences in the 735XT vs 935?

Still, I know, NOTHING comes close to SAPPHIRE

I think the link I gave in post 2 should mention any notable differences between the 735xt and 935, but if it doesn't - sorry, I've read so many pages that remembering the source is difficult.

As for the 935 vs base fenix 5, it seems to be essentially the same watch, the one is just lighter  and plastic while the other heavier and stronger. I do believe the 935 ought to be much more accurate with gps tracking than the fenix 5's, which was also mentioned in the thread. I think the 935 and fenix 3 are the go-to watches for triathlons. It sounds like you can't go wrong with a 935, but it may still be overkill for your needs

I also thought the 935 seems like a great option and definitely a strong consideration.

The thread you posted was extremely helpful.

I was half sold on this watch now until you mentioned "OVERKILL".

I have to agree with you on that. I don't want to read emails or answer my phone necessarily with my watch, etc, etc...

But then again I don't want to upgrade anytime soon either.

735XT could still be a contender at a cheaper price.

I also liked the Garmin Instinct.

What you're saying is word for word the mind thrashing I've been going through since starting that thread! In fact, I only placed the order for the vivoactive on Monday! It has everything I want (garmin pay) and need (gps, hr, different sports), except for maps and dedicated multisport tracking. To compensate for the lack of triathlon tracking, it has ConnectIQ which I read has an app that can be used for triathlon activities (not ideal, but functionally doable). Otherwise, it's really just missing maps which I wanted for the motorbike, so not too smart in my case. I kid you not, I saved up over this same time to afford the 5x+ and didn't even pick it in the end!

935, fenix 3 HR, fenix 5 (any), vivoactive 3, 735, Instinct, they should all do everything you want and will have features you may never use. Go with the one that looks the nicest for you and that will work for you, like sapphire or compensate with a screen protector

edit: Oh and whichever you choose, you can't really go wrong with them. If you want to upgrade to a costlier model later, you should be able to recuperate a decent amount of the cost by selling it again.

Navworld is running a special on the 735 and other watches at the moment.

For ease of use, see below watches and prices. While I didn't check every nook and cranny, these are in most cases the cheapest ones I found (FNB Devices included)

Vivoactive 3

R4300 black (same at takealot)

Someone mentioned buying a vivoactive 3 at dion wired for R4000, but their website is currently much more expensive than the above links.

Instinct (just different colours)

R6200

I bought a Garmin Instinct online from a UK shop.  Arrived 2 days later at R4300 including SA VAT instead of the R6200 that Sportmans is advertising at.

Does what it says on the box, plus I had a huge wipeout in a rock garden and hit the watch hard on a rock.  scratch on the bezel, but watch still working fine.

If you don't need the colour maps then Instinct is a good option. If you need to track HR while swimming then its out ( doesnt work with HRM Swim or HRM Tri). If you want colour maps, sapphire and good battery life and not worried about the Garmin Pay and music then get the 5X. Takealot had them on sale for 8500 in December and I should've bought one but I hesitated. Now it's up to 12000 again. I'm watching again when it does go on sale. Sign up for their alerts.

On the other hand, Cape Union Mart has a sale currently and you can get either the 5 plus titanium or DLC with sapphire glass for 13000 or the 5X Plus for 13000.

I looked an looked and looked an eventually decided on the vivoactive 3. Does everything I need cept open water swimming but I just use the walk activity and change it in the app an strava.

I then use a screen protector that run cheap here. Had tthe a year now and no scratches due to protector, probably not as good as a sapphire screen but these Garmin devices are designed for obsolescence so they only last 2 or 3 years then they either fail or we buy a newer model

Bite the bullet and pay the extra for a Fenix 5 sapphire. I went with the 5s model which is a slightly smaller face; it is an outstanding everyday watch as well as a 'sports watch'. It does cost a little extra, but a few years from now, you'll know where that extra went...

Until 5minutes ago I didn't even know what Garmin Pay was...

I don't need HR tracking during swimming - I'd just like the activity to be logged with regards to distance and time. Cycling I need more features.

Thanks for your advice

This is what I don't get.

Buying a HRM strap is about R2000 on most sites, R1800 sometimes.

Then why the jump of R2700 from 735XT to 735XT with HRM strap?

Or am I missing something? Does the Tri watch have different features?
