Linksfield Drive Hill training

I've heard about the hill at the end of Linksfield drive.

Yesterday I mapped a route that included this (as well as other hills in the area) to do some hill training.

Has anyone done the hill recently ? what are the conditions and safety like ?

And what is the climb like ? Komoot puts it at a 10% gradient in some sections.

I did it a couple of times back in the 90's. I remember it is seriously steep. Thought there is a road closure at the bottom now, so I'm not 100% sure if they will allow people in to train there.

A work colleague of a mate of mine trains on there, not sure how he get through. I suppose if you're on a bike they dont mind to much

You talking about the switchbacks?

Plenty everest attempts have been done there. We ride there often(some guys even ride there late at night without issues). The boom has enough of a gap to just ride passed it. Before the boom we would do a U-turn down at the robot by the main road but now with having to go around the boom it's often easier to just turn at the boom. The steepest part is just before the boom at the 2nd entrance to the school so depends if you want to leave that part out or not.

It's about 100m elevation gain per repeat. I will look on strava now and see how long one repeat is.

With the recent booms and road closures, it’s probably one of the safest places to do hill repeats in Jozi. Linksfield is great, but my personal preference is Northcliff. More variety and longer climbed available.

The route i have mapped out is a 50km ride from boksburg and includes Fishers Hill, Linksfield drive, Sylvias pass, Kloof rd and Old Makro Hill.

For a guy on my level of fitness its going to be pretty tough going.

Try kallenback drive instead... Cobbled at the bottom, steep and switchbacks, quiet and as safe as is possible...

My route home every freakin' day.....

Since you in the area why not throw in Sovereign Road (Bedfordview) and Munro Drive (Houghton)

I ride there.

Few cars and safe. Cap patrol there too. You can get past all the booms. As mentioned elevation is 100m from bottom to top with as mentioned the steepest part being at the top of the king david high school.

Nice view at the top and is fun coming down on the mountain bike doing the switchbacks.

Though it is a bitch to climb nicely with mtb knobbies haha.

You can do it then head west on Tregoning street and then head up Kallenbach drive for more switchbacks and climbing.

Kallenbach looks like a nice alternative to Sylvias pass and it will take me right up to my mates house where I can hall him out of bed and onto his bike.

Sovereign Road. That hill still gives me nightmares. Lived just off of it as a kid and always ended our local rides going up there. Was always torture!
