How much are you prepared to pay for a service?

Not a cent.

Prices being charged are crazy.

Been doing maintenance and servicing my bikes for the past five years.

Regular preventative maintenance also goes a long way in cost saving.

Im sure your boss feels the same way about your salary.

I'm tempted to do this next time my Reverb needs a service! Previous bill was more than R3000 and I could have just bought a Lyne dropper. Maybe not as fancy but it sucks that parts and labour is so damn expensive.

Or should I watch the hell out of Youtube repair videos and buy a rebuild kit?

I like to work on my own bikes and I'll gladly pay someone more competent to work on suspension/wheels.

How long had you ridden it for between services?

Time is a precious commodity for me. I will happily pay a premium to have someone I trust service my bike. My mechanic has a one man business in town, which provides an income for him and his family. He does great work and stands by his work. I am happy to pay him. In fact, we have an arrangement where I occasionally PayPal him spare cash that I rarely have and he keeps a record of the balance and deducts any work that he does. Works well for me as I don’t need to fork out as much when he does a big job.

Agreed. Boss-man must be thinking how crazy it is to get such exceptional quality at such a bargain-bin price. Almost as if there was a clearance mark-down sale on employees...

Bicycles, for the most part are simple machines that need few specialised tools and just a little know-how to maintain. I'm not talking major issues like suspension rebuilds or wheel building here.

Invest in a hands-on course and learn to do most things yourself and do most of the work yourself.

For the price of a wash-and-lube and half a day of your time you can learn almost everything you need to know to keep your bike running sweetly, including how to replace worn-out parts.

Many of us don't have spare hours to actually do the work ourselves, but at least having the knowledge will put into perspective the work needed to accomplish certain jobs, like replacing a cassette, chain and gear cables.

Sadly I generally do everything myself, from building the bikes to all maintenance as I find the variability of the work performed erratic at best.  Even the best workshops.

I cannot build wheels however, or service shocks, but have found reliable for that in Cape Town.

I also recently built my road bike from scratch, and strangely the only thing that worried me was wrapping the bar and bleeding the roadie hydro discs.

I need to have my DH bike Fox 40 serviced, and am tempted to do this myself, but will be dropping off at Stoke.

To give some perspective - we charge 1,500kr (R3,000) for a full strip down and rebuild and we have about 10-15 a month. People think the price is reasonable.
