Brake Swap

Hi

 

I'm trying to swap the brakes between my bikes and have a few questions. I have a new bike but much prefer the brakes from my old bike. That is the reason for the swap. 

 

 

- The front seems straight forward

 

- The rear, The fittings are different (where the cable fits into the caliper). One fits straight and the other from the side. How do I get around this? Or am I missing something? (Pics attached)

 

I was thinking that it would be great to use the existing cable on the bike and just swap the caliper and lever (Mainly because 1 of the bikes has internal routing)

 

 

Also the one are 180/160 rotors and rotors on the other are 200/180 rotors. Will This be a problem?

Shimano brakes?

 

Swop them at the levers not at the caliper.

 

Also what brakes are swapping with what? External Internal?

 

 

M506 (Deore) with Tektro Gemini 

 

The Deore are currently external

 

The Rear Tektro is internally routed.

imo ride the deore brakes for a bit, and as said above, put the 200/180 rotors on the new bike.

 

then see from there.

 

 

Sorry, I should have said, The Deore brakes are on the old bike (With the 180/160 rotors)

 

The Tektro is on the new bike (200/180 rotors) and compared to the deore are absolute rubbish! Thats why i want the Deore on the new bike.

This is one of those jobs that unless you've got a fair amount of spare time, patience and beer I'd take to a shop. You won't be able to just swap levers and calipers, the fittings are different.

 

You'll need a bleed kit, a new barb and olive for each of the rear brakes, and the patience to faff with routing the hose through the frame (this is what the beer is for). Also, if the hoses are different lengths, you'll need a new hose for one of them. Adapters will be fine if you keep the rotors on the bikes they're currently on.

And do you like how the brakes work or how the lever looks. 

 

If you like how the brake works, then you will have to change levers and calipers. The whole system works as one, this is not the same as a cable system.

 

If you are adamant on using the tektro calipers with the Deore levers, then take into account that piston ratio can be different, changing your stroke distance. Also make sure that the brake fluids are comparable.

No issues taking it into a bike shop, Just thought it would be a nice project to try tackle on my own. Have a bleed kit and beer! Will try get the barbs and olives.

So want to swap the levers and pistons.

He wants to swap the Caliper AND Lever, leaving the rear hoses on the bikes they're on. 

 

OP - that's easy, you'll just need new olives and barbs, as well as a bleed kit, like Droo mentioned. Then the right size spanners, maybe a craft knife, and away you go. 

 

Obv the front brake is just a straight swap.

Been on holiday so finally getting back to this.

 

For anyone doing this in future, The front is pretty much a straight swap (Give or take a few washers)

 

My initial plan of using the existing cable for the rear and just swapping the caliper and lever won't work because I can't get the rear fitting separately, so need to undo at the lever and keep the caliper end on. 

 

Getting a bleed cup at lunch and will tackle this tonight.  Fingers crossed for an easy transition.
