The ultimate Achievement for Non professionals

I haven't done MDS (though I have done the South African version - KAEM)

Barkley is in another world though, there is no comparison - way, way, way tougher than MDS. Something like 8 people ever have finished Barkley. By comparison hundreds of amateur office workers have finished MDS.

Laz (the guy who started Barkley) has another seriously evil race  - the Backyard Ultra

Here's an article on this brutal race

Is it you?! I've seen a pic of a GP number plate at a Barkley Marathons race.

A sub 20 5km is one of my goals

Managed to get a 25.03 at my local parkrun not too long ago. that means i need to slice a minute/km off of my current pace. Seems impossible for me at this stage

Little assistance with the wording, but MASSIVE kudos when you get that right, big ask! Going to take some consistent fartlek and sprints training, spending lots of time at VO2 max. No amount of long steady runs can prepare you to drop 1min/km.

I think this is a very interesting thread, well done.

When you say non-professionals I presume you mean amateur athletes, meaning they do not earn a living from their chosen sport, but does that include corporate or private sponsorship from companies? Anyway, just being nitpicky.

Watched a GCN YouTube video on the Huub Wattbike track riders. I think that is the ultimate achievement in track cycling perhaps.

But ultimate achievement is a very broad concept. I suppose becoming a legend, whether in your small community or the greater cycling/running community.

I guess I mean you and me. People who are working 9 to 5 and training and competing in the hours in between. There are many on here who I would say have achieved.. But then all they are doing is moving the goalposts further away and making it harder for themselves.

It's a complex question because like the sub 20 5km mentioned there. For many that is a massive achievement.. But for many it's just part of their training. Should the scale be shifted dependent on your ability or should it be set in stone for each discipline....

Good lord no. You need to be all kinds of crazy to attempt Barkley. I've done my share of ultra marathons but the most I'll ever do is 1 night with no sleep - with Barkley it's more like 3 nights!

Hahaha crazy indeed. I love following Barkley lead-up and training, and that backyard Ultra race,.The battle with Dauwalter and Steene last year was awesome.
