How long to train

Nice Bike!     Learn how to keep your cadence up and like the others said - get out there and ride!

My first ever MTB race was the Rhodes Extreme 10 weeks after I bought my bike.   I trained like crazy - 3-4  times per week and did many hills and 60 km rides including Breedts Nek.  Took me 7 hours to finish the last stage (Grand Father with a 65km climb)   :w00t:   Was awesome and the training helped much! It is always more fun if you are fit and able to spend time in the saddle.

Agree 100% Being fit enough to cycle x km's is often not the challenge. Training to be fit & skilled enough to enjoy the ride should be the bigger goal

Health, weight and age could mean you have to be modest in your goals, i.e. take more time to achieve them. Assuming these are fine, the priority in MTB is not to get hurt. So work out if you lacking in this area or not, ride with flat pedals for a while if you are. For a younger person you don't need to train for 22 km race, training does make it much more fun.
