Buyers Advice Required - 29er Carbon

Afternoon,

I am in the market for a new 29er carbon dual-suspension.

Which is the best value for money bike on the market?

SA brands or imported brands?

As carbon bikes seem to start in the range of R70k... I was hoping closer to R50k

Is it better buying new... or rather pre-owned with better specs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Questions like the above lead me to believe youre fairly new to the sport / addiction.

Any particular reason you want carbon only?

Carbon these days is mostly ride feel as its very stiff... Some Aluminium bikes come in close to the weight of carbon at significantly less cost, its just the components that they slap on that are not the greatest.

Maybe youve just got the money to blow, then lucky you... enjoy your purchase. Either way you'll have fun.

I followed advice, sold my 100mm travel Trek 9.7 Top Fuel Carbon, for a Scott Spark 30 Alu 120mm travel, and about 1.5kg heavier and I love it.

This doesn't mean that Scott is better than Trek at all, it's about the price firstly as well as the comfort.

Get an Alu bike and spend on better / lighter wheels.

Got my 2019 Scott Spark RC 900 Team new for R48k. Online prices not always the best. Was really surprised by pricing of my local bike shops. Mine is more XC with only 100mm travel

Which bike shop did you it from?

My opinion will always be the same on this topic: Build, build, build, build.

By building a bike you get exactly what you want / can afford without the hassle of having a bike that's 90% what you wanted.

I mean look at the Trek range (I myself is a die hard Trek fan and won't ride anything else) - on their bikes within the 50-60k range (let's use the Top Fuel 9.7 - 2019 price of R59k) you still only get SRAM NX with a Reba fork. The brakes are also like MT500 - WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

With a budget of R50k you could put full XT (1x11 with an oval) with probably a SID and Kashima coated shock in the rear.

Yes if you do a build you may not get a lifetime warranty on the frame (if you buy second hand) but is that not why you insure the bike?

I will even take it one step further and tell you that I will help you in building it, if it's not something you want to attempt alone

I agree fully, but you probably going to spend much more?

SID fork (± R13k) + decent wheels (±R10k) + groupset (± R10k) and say R5k for bars, saddle will leave you little for a lekker frame if the project cost is R50k ? Unless I don't know where to look?

You could definitely spend way more than R50k, without a doubt.

But I can't make a statement like that without backing it up with some facts so I will give you a breakdown  :D.

Fork: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/367715-sid-world-cup-fork/ - R6k

Frame with shock: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/359662-trek-top-fuel-99-rsl/ - R20k

Chain ring https://www.on-lynecomponents.com/collections/cranks-chainrings/products/96-bcd-chainring-32t - R 549.00 + shipping of probably about R100

Groupset https://www.easybike.co.za/shimano-xt-groupset-m8000-1-1x11.html - R 12k

Wheels: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/368077-brand-new-fulcrum-red-zone-500/ - R 5000.00

Allowance for all the smalls like the handle bars, saddle, grips, seat post etc: R 5000.00

Total: R 48 649.00  :D - Rushing now, so hopefully I did not forget something

Solomons have a special on a Merida 96 6000 carbon for R40000. Full fox and 12 speed gx. I am not a Merida fan, but that is truly a great price.
