Bike Carrier - Hyundai i20 MK2

Holdfast also have platform bike racks. Not as refined as Thule (some will say) but does the job well. I have been using the tilt one for 6 months now and I have had no issues. I got mine on a special a while back but I see the price has gone up again.

I also owned a Hyundai i10 grand and had a thule strap on for a few years. I cut up an old inner tube and put over all the contact points, no paint damage observed. I had an extra number plate made up which I would cable tie to the rack to be legal.

But yes, carriers are the bees knees

with a grand i10, even if you wanted to fit a towbar you could not. Not without voiding the warranty.

Could you elaborate on this?

Using unapproved towbars will void the warrantee on any vehicle.

There is NO Toyota approved towbar for the Etios .... I made my own to use the bike rack ,,, knowing that any resultant issues would be void of warantee.

MANY of the new smaller cars dont have manufacturer approved towbars ....

Something to do with the grand i10 chassis structure that did not allow towbar fitment safely. Not even a factory approved one available.

I lost a few deals when I was at Hyundai due to this, cyclists wanting a towbar for the sole purpose of using a bike rack.

website says Europe only

and out of stock ...

and more than R 1 500, before transport costs ....

It is possible to make a "trailer board"  for about R400 .... but WHY ?  Surely "reputable companies" will sell SAFE TO USE goods .....   and blocking vehicle lights endanger all road users ....   :cursing:

Can't blame the manufacturer for stupid user's decisions. The onus is on the user to ensure safe transportation with a light board or license plate holder.

Then it becomes a slippery slope before we get riders blaming manufacturers for their crashes.

Philip I think we owe it to ourselves to put pressure on the distributors to act responsibly.

Every unit they sell without a set of lights puts "OUR" lives in danger on the road !!  YES, we can not force them to sell lights to every client.

BUT, when a distributor can not provide a complete legal and safe system for those that want to act responsibly ... frankly our industry can do well without such distributors.

"We" complain about a lack of policing ...

"We" complain about lawlessness ...

"We" complain about unsafe roads ....

Each of us CAN do our little bit to improve the safety on our roads.  And visibility is big step in the right direction.

O-well, just my random thoughts .... just tired of distributors in it for a quick buck ....

Those that want to act responsibly will just buy something from the competitors. If they can't supply me with a light board, then I'll buy a Thule or a Holdfast (I have 2 holdfast racks, so I have already voted with my wallet.)

Those who have no desire to act responsibly will will buy a holdfast, a thule or a Saris without a light board or they will build their own rack (I had one of those as well.)

Sorry but no amount of pressure on forums or social media will change what the suppliers bring in, as long as people buy it, they will have incentive to sell it. Saris racks are hardly a quick buck. With or without a light board.

I believe with the smaller cars it is illegal as the trailer has the potential to exceed the cars weight, or something to that effect anyway.

Imagine when the trailer tries to overtake you under braking.........

100% agree, it's like the locally produced TRAX racks for motorcycles.

The most dangerous thing ever as it obscures your rearward view AND covers every conceivable way for somebody to know what you intend to do.

Its the laws of the road not being enforced unfortunately.......

every car has a max towing capacity that is calculated using the cars weight. You will see a max braked and unbraked capacity stated.

The i10 which weighs less than the grand i10 has an approved towbar.

YES, that is the ONE side of the coin ....

But when we KNOW better, why support companies that sell dangerous items .... We CAN "encourage" companies to start behaving more responsibly.

yea yea, I know many still wont buy the light-boards ... but it is one excuse less for them to be a danger on the roads ....

Does the i10 have headlight adjustment for when you have a load on the towbar? Otherwise your normal headlights become brights (True Story)

I dont recall if it does, probably not

Now if only people could figure out how to USE that adjuster ...

During our recent trips we encountered many apparently on brights, totally blinding oncoming traffic .... flash them and they light the skies as they switch to brights ....
