Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a bike and the salesman suggested the Silverback Solo 1. I'm pretty new to this which means I'm not clued up with the spesifications and not sure which bike and brand to choose. Do you think the Silverback is a good buy for beginners?

Very good buy for beginner. It’s got the latest tech and mid range specs. And it’s quite light. Go for it

Xander that certainly is a very nice bike to start with.  Depending on your budget you have two options :

R22k - http://www.olympiccycles.co.za/shop/silverback-sola-1/

R15k - https://bike-addict.co.za/products/silverback-sola-1-2018

The 2018 model has a 2x11 drive train.  Frankly, that is perfect for the price.  There is a big hype about going 1x (single gear in the front), but a 2x still has a number of benefits ....  and that R7k saving can be put to good use buying the extras you will need :

- Helmet

- Top

- padded shorts

- peddles and shoes  (for now flat peddles and tekkies will do the job, but in time this will be a R4k item)

- gloves

- basic tools, pump, etc ...

PS - Please order it with the tubeless conversion done

I bought a second hand Solo 1 for my girlfriend and have been very impressed.

The only downside were the rims, stick to Maxis tires and do not, do not, try put Schwalbe tires on those rims, they come off. This is not so uncommon issue with Stans rims and Schwalbe tires.

But, that aside, it is "comfortable" frame. i have a Giant XTC which is super rigid and fast and transfers every bump directly to your bottom. The Silverback is not as stiff, but a hellava lot more compliant and comfortable.

Thanks for all the replies. I was shocked when I woke up and saw all these replies, didn't expect it at all. I will definitely have a look at some of the bikes you suggested and will also consider the Silverback much more now. I searched just about everything yesterday to get a review on the Silverback but was unsuccessful and you guys helped a lot. I will go with the 1x gear in front, everybody I spoke to told me it's a major benefit for uphill rides and I think I will ride quite a lot of uphill taking my environment in consideration. Once again thank you for all the response, I'm looking forward to move in to a community this helpful.

Thank you for your reply Dust46. The issue I'm sitting with is I'll have to take out bike finance which means they only start to finance for bikes more that 20k.

This is so frustrating. 2019 comes with Judy Silver, 2018 with Judy Gold. Before they all came with a Reba.

I'd also rather go with the Titan Drone. You get a better fork, and 1x12.

Coming from a guy with Sola 2 and super happy.
