It looks like brilliant weather for Mountain Biking on Saturday!  Get ready for peach and plum orchards in full bloom and spectacular fynbos everywhere.  Definitely worth mounting the GoPro.  The Mountain Ridge Winery's Ramkiekie market will ensure something cold is waiting for you at the finish line!

Those views may well make it worth the drive .....  :w00t:

The 8km is still happening ?  Just as an entry on the day though ?

the 25km is just too far for Maritz at this stage ... but if we bring our cameras we may just add a new dimension to an 8km ride ...  :whistling:

Absolutely beautiful today, the hottest one I've had so far, but loved it so much to have the chance to go up the pass and see Suurvlakte again.

Well organised, exceptionally well marshaled (could actually have gotten away with less). Water points seemed good, did not stop at any though.

My only complaint is no Coke at the finish. I stopped and looked around and nothing was insight. At least there were some excellent wine on sale.

Maybe the date needs to move to a less crowded one, attendance (Racetec finishers) seems down - a lot :

2019 : 15

2018 : 42

2017 : 69

2016 : 83

2015 : 36 (75km)

2014 : 31 (75km)

Nothing wrong with the route, so I think a day with no other events will increase the rider figure.

Every single event we attended this year was seriously down on numbers from 2017 and 2018 ....

Then again, in 2017 and 2018 we got lots of emails about upcoming events.

This year I get the odd email about an event in Joburg, and no matter how often I email stating I want info on Western Cape event I get ZERO info on local events.

BIG THANKS to Estelle for this thread, or we would have missed out on a stunning ride !

Maritz and I left home before 6:00, wife in bed with the flu.

Wimpy breakfast, and then a lovely ride via Slanghoek valley.  Might as well ENJOY the scenery

We got to the venue a bit early, and got our registration done quickly.  Even time for a coffee before getting the bikes ready.

We LOVE this starting setup, where everybody can actually stand next to the schute and see the other groups lining up and starting.  This is the 40km group lining up -

Thanks RaceTech

And then it was time for Maritz and I to line up for the 8km ride.  Today I deliberately got Maritz at the FRONT of the pack.  Fully prepped him to stay LEFT, knowing the faster riders will quickly get past us.  This was my main motivation for the day ... he is still struggling with these group starts.  So GLAD it all worked out perfectly on the day !!

Nice sized field for the 8km ride, with lots of Qhubeka riders.  Having heard and read about Qhubeka this is the first time we encountered their riders at an event.  Impressed with the group of riders.

Most of the field was significantly older than Maritz.  But right behind us another father and son lined up.  Turns out the boy is also 8 years old, like Maritz.

And then we were off.

Maritz did very well to stay left and keep a straight line.  4 or 5 Qhubeka riders came flying through the pack and shot out ahead !!  They did it deliberately and in a very safe manner, respect !  Few more riders passed us along the flat tar section.  And then we turned up the rocky climb ....  Maritz and I do a fair bit of climbs on our local trails, so we got our gearing sorted and kept a steady pace, well as much as that rocky surface would allow for the small kids bikes ....  It was almost scary as a couple of young riders came RACING past us on that first climb !!!

I had to calm Maritz down and remind him that we are pacing ourselves .....

All to soon we entered the netted orchards .... WOW !!!  What a visual feast !

And then we started passing kids that started walking ....

We stopped to help a young girl.  Her sister was trying to convince her to turn back, and she was close to tears .... turns out she had gone for the smallest gear at the back and obviously struggled with the hill.  Changed the gearing and they rode with us for the next 1 or 2 kilometers.  Saw them at the end, glad to report she finished her ride.

And so we got higher and higher and the views just got better and better

SUPER happy with Martiz's ride !!  Pity RaceTech did not record the kids race, would have been nice to see where he finished against his age group .... We know that the other boy, pictured above, finished 2 minutes ahead of Maritz, not sure where the others of his age group finished ....

NICE route for the kids !!  JIP, those hills are steep for the small ones.  JIP, some loose sandy sections .... JIP, some rocky-road sections.  Certainly not a very difficult ride though.  And the marchalls were BRILLIANT at warning the kids where to slow down.

All too soon the race was over .... There was very nice vibe on the farm.

And the roosterkoek was just superb

Staff watching over the cars in the parking area

Nice live music.

BIG thumbs-up to the organisers for a truly stunning event

Something like 8 funrides (road & mtb) near Cape Town over the past 2 weekends, zero over the next 2 weekends - just putting it out there....
