would be interesting to hear if anybody has done a 1x conversion on a 2x crank .....

how did the allignment work out ?

About to do it, not done yet.

Looking at the cranks the 2x setup (see pics) vs 3x setup the 1x chainring gets mounted in the same position on both options - on the inside of the 104BCD area. I'm also changing a 3x to 1x - for that I would either need to use shorter chainring bolts to accommodate for the missing outer chainring OR I can use spacers on the existing chainring bolts, which can also then move the chainring a few mm closer to the bike if used between the spider and chainring (and the spacers work out cheaper).

For the original question, looks like DieselnDust had the simplest explanation :)

I have. Shimano slx 2x Crank. Alignment is good. You can always adjust alignment with chainring spacers or with BB spacers. But I didn't need to. The 2x setup worked fine with the big ring throughout the whole range, so it's still lekker.

Thanks ridr and PhillipV, good to know it is possible

When we did the x3 to x1 conversion I found the "mid ring" position lined up best with both extremes at the back .... dont want "back-pedal-chain-drop" issues, which apparently  are linked to mis-allignment.

As for the length of the chainring bolts ..... I did not like the look of the spider with the missing big ring ..... bit of hand tools and did this ....
