Get a cheap bike to put on the trainer.

Yip, currently I have my single speed on the trainer. I only do program specific training in ERG mode, so no need to shift gears

Not sure if you're aware, but the Wattbike Atom is a Smart Trainer + bike Chassis in one. With the Wattbike "classic" your argument holds. The Atom doesn't come with a screen, you BYOD (bring your own device) like you do with a Kicker/Neo/Hammer etc. It's just sensors and a controlled resistance as with the others, only difference is you don't need to BYOB (bring your own bike - OK I made this acronym up)

Yip, I’m aware. Let me give a different example then. Take the new Tacx NEO, it has technology built in to simulate gravel/bumpy roads through the drivetrain. The Atom as not and most likely will not ever be able to with a firmware update. Or the KICKR Climb unit. The Atom will never be able to simulate hill angles. Now these might be irrelevant addons today but what when some really cool stuff comes along.

Also, make no mistake, I’m a huge Wattbike fan, think the Atom looks fantastic and no doubt is an awesome training tool.

Ah, ok, understood.

Something I do see on the Atom is that it "only" has a 57-83cm saddle height range.... I ride with my top of saddle at 85cm above BB (measured along seattube), so depending on the way that it's measured.... this could be a problem for very tall riders.
