Zoo Cookie Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 on the highveld site, the organisers did post a list of costs involved in organising a race like the 94.7. for me it put thing into perspective. there's a lot more involved than meets the eye. if all goes well, i'll be there this year.
Yang Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Will do it- my 4th or 5th one- still want to break 3:00, after my last one of 3:05. Its only one of 3 races I do in RSA, along with Argus and Amashova.
mudda Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 I think the event is a great way to get new cyclists to the sport. Most of us train and race on Busy roads and at least cross a busy intersection every now and then on our bikes. This is probably why the safety aspect of the race is not such an important point for you and I. You dont just ride one race a year - there are plenty of them and you probably have traffic on those races. When you train - u will probably have some kind of traffic. I think that the contribution from sponsers and advertisers should at least keep the entry fees for cyclists under control. I am sure there is some form of payment for the tv coverage. So yes while there is a long list of expenses and salary costs, I think keeping the costs as low as possible, will go a long way to retaining existing riders and bringing new riders to the sport. http://www.cyclechallenge.co.za/downloads/CC%20Entry%20Fee%20Costs%20-%20HSP%202008.pdf?v=RQaRMipXno4 mudda2008-09-07 13:36:54
fastone Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 I am quite sure the petrol price came down over the last two months For me to ride 100km on roads that are normally congestedike is absolutely worth every cent. Every morning I sit on the congested N1/M1 I dream of the ONE day in the year I have the freedom to ride at a high speed without worrying about cars. This is how life should be! Cars should be in the yellow lines and bikes on the road! Oops I think I was just dreaming there - Nope worth every cent!
porky Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 When I enter a race / event I dont do so because I want to ride 100kms. I can do that anywhere. I do it because I am looking for a social, entertaining day out, the bicycle ride is just a means to an end for me. Its like eating at a restaurant, if I am hungry, I eat at home, the foods better and its made with love, I go to a restaurant because its social and entertaining, the food is secondary. So I need to ask myself, what am I getting entertainment wise for my money, personally red cones and straw bails dont cut it for me as entertainment, I expect it anyway, - if I go to a restaurant I expect a table and a chair, I expect the owner to invest in security, knives and forks, and a clean wash room. Bicycle races tend ride on the back of "charity" which is noble and I support it but personally I get better entertainment for R500.00 odd (my wife and I) elsewhere, so its unlikely I will ride. Charity is something that we do because we want to - I dont like the attitude of "we the organisers donate this to this charity, support that cause with your funds" - what if I prefer to support another charity? At a restaurant I have choice, steak, fish, chicken, pasta - dont expect me to agree with your charities because "you feel thay are good". Finally, I quite honestly feel R245.00 for a tin medal, and a coke is just ridiculous, the organisers need to invest in the event the same as a restraunteur invests in his infrastructure of airconditioners, lights, tables, chairs etc, the organisers should buy their own cones, fencing, tables etc, and keep them, they dont deteriorate, its just wastefull and arrogant to expect the community to cough up every year for rental of things which could have been purchased outright 10 years ago and kept.
Wannabe Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I see that at present (checked 5 minutes ago) only 15211 entries for race, and online entries closing soon. Seems that cyclist do find this race a tad too expensive. (still not sure that I will/will not do it this year (done 7 already), must decide soon)

Does anybody know if a license is required to do it and do they sate it on the entry form?
scotty Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I Does anybody know if a license is required to do it and do they sate it on the entry form? yes lic is required, yes its stated on entry form.
pastapouch Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 no, its just way to short and easy for the monetary layout.
ukethi Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I have entered but I did take pause and consider it, also not being licensed the R30 temp licence does annoy. Hopefully CSA puts it all to good use. It is becoming more difficult to justify these entry fees, especially in view of all the sponsorship something like the 94.7 gets

Slowbee Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I Does anybody know if a license is required to do it and do they sate it on the entry form? yes lic is required' date=' yes its stated on entry form. [/quote'] will ppa membership count as a licence?
scotty Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Not sure about ppa Slowbee, it needs to be CSA.
Wannabe Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Entries up to 15925, that is 714 entries in one day. Seems the cyclist are heeding the SMS warning that the entries are closing soon.
Wannabe Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 See that Closing date has been extended to 30 Sept 2008. Entries only 22 436, way short of the 35 000 they want.

So only 15 000 ride on the day.
