Giant Sedona

Morning Hubbers,

I need some tech advice please.

Looking for a bicycle for my Malawian right hand man when it comes to garden work and everything else maintenance wise at home.

Budget is ± R1000 as Elias insisted that he wants to buy for it himself (very proud, confident and genuine nation that!)

So, instead of buying a Totem or similar from GAME, I am considering to get a more old school type MTB for two reasons:

a) If in good nick, they will last a lot longer, and

b) a Malawian riding a new shiny Totem has a bigger target on his back to Tsoti's than with a old Mtb. His words.

So, I found a Giant Sedona in what seems to be very good condition, especially when comparing to other bikes of similar value and age on Facebook. Gumtree etc.

Photos below.

The only thing I am a bit unsure about, is the brakes: would I get spares for this in the future?

Is it possible/easy to convert these (M-style brakes I think) to V-brakes for which spares might be more available?

That is a much better option as opposed to a Game special. V-brakes will work on those brake boses. V-brakes replaced cantilevers and mounting positions didn’t change. If well looked after, that bike will last a very long time.

This could even be the Sedona i had stolen outside the neelsie in 1999!

way better option, assuming there is nothing FUBAR on it. eg, if the one hub is faaarked then you're already going to have to start throwing money at it. even then it's a better deal.

V-brakes will work fine, but they don't work if they are not connected. they are not connected on commuter bikes because the wheels are ~~~~~~~. so the best thing you can teach a commuter is how to true a wheel.

oh and ghetto tubeless.

I would think getting brake pads shouldnt be a problem.

V brakes will fit but you would need to change the brake levers too which appear to be attached to the shifters. This would mean new shifters as well. I would stick to the cantis.

You mentioned a budget of R1000. How much is the asking price? That giant looks to be in good condition for its age but appears to be early 90s and was pretty low down in the range when new. I wouldnt pay R1000 for it.

Thanks for the feedback! I also think it will outlast many others.

Haha!! 1999 @ Neelsie sounds about right yes. ;-)

Will be sure to inspect all in detail to try and calculate "hidden" costs. thanks for the pointers.

ps. ghetto tubeless?  Excuse my friend, he is a bit slow ;-)

Following a quick Google, I agree with you on availability of brake pads:

and, if the cantilevers still work great, I will not change them, only thought if they give in, and I cannot get any spares.

Asking price = R1000. I thought of offering R 800

PS. You would be amazed at he asking prices people ask for these/similar/worse MTB's
