How to find the original Bike Owner

I am trying to get hold of the original owner of a Santa Cruz bike I recently purchased second hand through a bike dealer. The bike dealer is not co-operating.

 

What are my options ? Is there a Santa Cruz database I could look up the owner through? If so how do I look the person up? Is there a unique serial number tied to my bike?

 

Any other ideas?

Santa Cruz is usually easy to see the serial number unless it has been resprayed in which case you would have better luck posting a picture and trying to find the owner.

I would certainly hope the bike shop isn't cooperating. If I sell a car/bike/item to a dealership or shop they become the owner and I'd want them to safeguard my personal info - that and less hassle is the only reason I'd take considerably less from them than I would get for a direct sale on the 2nd hand market.

I actually didn't know that... but anyway, I definitely don't want any shops giving out my personal info. You take that cut in price for them to take any issues off your hands.
