Mavic Ksyrium - Failure ?

Hi All !<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Could you pleas help me to overcome the big fear my wheel build up in me.

If anyone had similar experience with the Mavic Ksyrium SL , please tell me what the technical outcome and conclusions are. I have this Mavic wheels for about one year and 5000km. I did buy as a second hand but wheels are still in ?perfect condition?. ( Or ?they become deadly dangerous ).

On my Saturdays ride I had heavy crash caused by my Mavic rear wheel FREEWHEEL.!!

At about 34 kmh, and cruising  down the very small gradient, I step out of the saddle in order to add some speed and to relax my body and arms. The right pedal simply disappeared under my foot and I ended up in heaviest crash in my life.

Friend of mine, who helped me on the spot realized that cassette is spinning freely in both directions ????  The spinning of the cassette in both directions produced nice, as usual, noise of pawls running over that internal tooted ring ??????????

A day latter, when I put myself together, I approached to the lethal wheel problem.

Before I touched the wheel, I tested  cassette  again, just to make shure that I did not dreamed about mistake. Cassete had zero free play, was free spinning in both directions accompanied by clear and determined noise from both pawls inside.

Future stripping just contributed to my total confusion: Nothing wrong, nothing damaged ????????

1.     Correctly assembled and torque;

2.     A bit of thin oil inside the body;

3.     Both pawls intact;

4.     One small pawl spring just slightly out of shape ??????

The wheel remains open and I won?t be able to ride for weeks.

What do you think ????

The freehub body is toast. Without examining I can't say why, but the brearings could be kaput and the play in the body could then make it miss the pawls. The pawls could be dirty and sluggish, there could be a mouse in there jamming things up etc etc.

Get a new freehub body since the cost of a body is cheap compared to the pain of squashed nuts.

i had same problem but before you replace body look at the pawls and see if there is wear on the sides because if there is play it means that the springs were never put in place properly and the pawls were never in the right spot so before going through R800 for new body you might just wanna check the pawls and replace them

R800 for a new freehub body? Eina! That hurts more than connecting the top tube with that part of your body.

A wheel where the freehub body costs R800 is immoral. Get a standard wheel.

It is NOT, and again, NOT the matter of the price - IT IS ME BEING THREE TIMES THAT DAY UNCONCIOUS and even now I feel like I am a puzzle of 100 pcs. How the wheel of such a reputation can do this ???????

By reputation, you mean marketing.

The Angry Asian (James Huang) hi-lited the problems with these wheels many years ago.

It is a rubbish wheel made by a rubbish company that's just a shadow if its former great self. Every single engineered component, from spokes to hub design is rubbish.

O_o glad I came across this post.

I am busy considering new parts for the bike I'm planning to have built and a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL premiums was high on my list. I think I will rather get the 200g heavier Easton EA70's.

After riding with Easton Vista SL for the past two years I have not had one single problem.

Sorry for the hijack I hope you get your wheels sorted.

They're probably closer in weight than that, Mavic habitually understate the weight of their wheels.

I've never understood why people want Ksyrium's anyway. They're not particularly light, not particularly aero and not particularly cheap.
