Following from the discussion in the TdF2020  about cycling being so, well, white, and the current global awareness of racism, surely we should have an honest and open discussion about it here.

Lets try look at it in a positive sense and what we can do about it on a personal level, in particular here in SA in terms of clubs, outreach and upliftment projects etc, And not to dwell on the past or the present, in terms of the failing of others or other public bodies or institutions.

I've been involved in a few youth outreach and education projects (non-profit), its been extremely rewarding but not without its challenges.

I think the songo project in Stellies is a good starting point - will dig up info and post later.

I think it all has to start with the grass roots and given time it will breed more top riders. I think cycling at a top level just costs a lot of money which will always slow development programs.

If you look at the paddling community it is incredible to see how well the change a life paddlers have done, the talent and physical prowess is there.

A racey boat, paddle, pfd etc can be bought for the price of a top end wheel set though.

Theres a saying in motorsport...the quickest way to become a millionaire is to enter the sport as a billionaire. There are similarities in many sports...competitive cycling probably more so.
