I need some input please.

I have Sram xo 2 x 10 groupset with 38T & 24T upfront and has a sram MTH 746 rear hub.

I need a new 10 speed cassette and was thinking if I can purchase Shimano CS-HG50-10 T11-36?
Will that sram hub work?
Will this setup work?
what else must i consider?

Fitting it to a trek xcaliber 5 29er ( my sons bike )

bear in mind i have minimal bike knowledge and will be using this a first project build to learn alot more about doing my own building up and servicing.

Hi, we all start to learn somewhere.

You will need a chain whip and cluster nut tool (i think this is what it is called) to replace the cluster.

When talking about chains and clusters SRAM and Shimano are interchangeable. With chains you cna use SRAM, Shimano or KMC. Just ensure that what you buy is specific to MTB as road chains can be too short and the clusters to small (for my fat ass at least).

Easiest might be to take your wheel to LBS and get them to show you how to replace it.

Good luck

This is super helpful - thanks alot man youTube pulling through again

I have been technical all my life, fixing all sorts of complex things such as old-school typewriters and photocopiers etc. but then I would take my bike to the lbs every time I needed to have something sorted...this all despite my spending hours as a laaitie fixing all sorts of issues on my bikes with my pa. This culture of replace everything or have someone do it must end. I now believe in doing it yourself unless you are a complete nincompoop with a tool, in which case, rather LBS it.

Once I found Parktool on Youtube that sorted me for life. Now I can also fix these issues no hassle.

i agree, rather invest in the tools and learn the trade by trial and error so that atleast you capable of doing most things yourself

Will be some lessons learnt, this i know where I will end up having to go to lbs - but these parktool videos seem damn easy to follow.

appreciate it alot

so my dumb ass didnt consider the fact that this trek x caliber doesnt have the mounting points for the sram front deraillier

and nobody in SA has the adapter clamps and if I find it overseas sights prolly cost me R800 to  R1000 landed , it seems.

Man, what to do now? import it or rather go 1 x 11 or 1 x 12 and layout more cash for new groupset

rd has a clutch yes, just know my boy will need that extra granny gears.

Leave it as 1 x 10 and leave the 38T chain ring upfront?

dont want it to be too tough on him and then he loses interest in riding - this is project we building together to get him "into" the sport
