Block Posted December 29, 2020 Share Need some information. Can you convert a Shimano FH-M678 MTB hub from through axle to quick release. What do I need to get that done.My search on TheHub and Google does not give me enough info or a solution.
TheoG Posted December 29, 2020 Share I'm not familiar with that hub but if it is a front hub and 15 x 100 (non boost) I can help you. I had a "converter" machined for me but since sold the bike I used it on and hence don't use it anymore. If you can collect (or pay for postnet) you can have it for free. PM me if interested. Edit: Never mind I see its a rear hub, sorry. Edited December 29, 2020 by Theog
DrRichard Posted December 29, 2020 Share Hi I am busy with the same issue - converting an old Specialised rear hub to Qr - and have been reading and investigating - the more upmarket ones - will have their own converters - such a Lyne and stand etc. it depends on what the "endocarps" look like - if they can be removed and replaced with a QR version or you need to use a converter - the challenge with he converter is that they add width to the axle - 2mm flange each side to end cap so might not fit if not proprietary or you have to machine down the axle end caps to make it fit. am busy with my own conversion - have machined the new converter - but now need to take off the 2mm of each of the end caps - so a bit of a mission - but doable. basically you need 155mm rod with a 5mm hole down the middle that comes in two bits - one for each side - or one long one to go all the way thru (most drill bits are not that long so not that easy to machine

TheoG Posted December 29, 2020 Share Yip that is exactly what you need, you get both front & rear on that add, but look at the shipping cost ... That's why I had a front one made for me locally. If you can get the sizes, this might be a good option.

Vilgrim Posted December 29, 2020 Share Might I ask why you would want to go from thru-axle to QR? What is the benefit?
bertusras Posted December 29, 2020 Share Might I ask why you would want to go from thru-axle to QR? What is the benefit? Compatibility with your frame and/or fork, probably.
TheoG Posted December 29, 2020 Share Or get one machined... Look like that hub is non-boost (142mm), hence the 148 must become 142mm and the 160 need to be 154mm.

Shimano does not offer a conversion kit like some of the other hub manufacturers. Edited December 29, 2020 by Block TheoG
