Morning all,

Helping a friend to look for a new bike (well 2nd hand) but upgrade from his 26er Silverback.

We do mostly XC style riding with a little bit of trail thrown in there, and a 20km commute in summer (too cold now).

Need some opinions/guidance on what is a realistic 2nd hand price for a good condition 4-5yr old Anthem?

Let's hypothesize that the bike is still in good condition with no damage to the frame besides minor wear from riding, and either

(a) the bike is still stock standard as it was sold and just regularly/routinely serviced or

(b) some upgrades were done (eg. changing the 2x10 to a 1x11) but the rest is still stock. Newly fitted tyres, cables and a recent suspension service it bearings etc.

Thanks!

I sold my 2016 model (black and yellow frame) for R 15k some time ago. (no upgrades)

With today's pricing, I would guess R 16k - R 18k would be fair for the same model.

I would not go any older, as in 2016 they changed the frame design with a better supported seat tube/top tube (where they used to crack before)

Point B would be a little more difficult to quantify.

1 x 11 could be worth around R 4,000 if done with decent components (XT/GX ??) - How many km's after upgrade ?

Suspension service could be worth up to R 5,000 if done by the correct people (Stoke or similar for fork and shock), and bearing kit fitted properly. - How many km's after service ?

Hi Koos,

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

I have seen those yellow/black ones -very nice.

Interesting about the changed design, the ones you find in the R 15k-R20k are usually <2016.

There is one available like this: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/za/anthem-x-29er-2015

Here are some pics.

The guy bought it from mate(who bought it new) and it has seen minimal use.

Asking R19.9k  (asking R19k for it)

Would a Trance not be a better option?

They pedal really well and descend amazingly. There are a few going for bargain prices (by today's standards) in the classifieds.

I think you get far more versatility there and an amazingly capable bike for everything
