Hi Hubbers,

perhaps someone is looking to do the same. I am looking to swop out my 175mm Chrous 11 with stages crank for a 170/165 crank of similar spec (with or without) stages.

ja ja ja i read reasonably well too but why...??

I’ve been told it’s too long and I’d be better off with a shorter one. I know crank length is a very complex discussion

Ok I won’t press the issue further. It is complex indeed.

at 172cm I use 175mm crank son my MTB without issue. Femur length is more the issue and hip flexibility but each to the advice they’re given

I'm taller than you and use 170mm on my 2 'proper bikes' and 145mm on my 2 mini's.

I used to run 175mm on the mtb, 180mm on the SS and 172.5mm on the roadie. I settled on 170mm as it feels the most efficient/comfortable.

Sometimes it's less about performance metrics and a lot about comfort and feel too.

I reckon Sampaj will dig going shorter.

Everything I've read suggests that power output only actually starts to drop off for cranks shorter than 145mm, but anything between there and 190mm is negligible ITO performance. So just size for comfort and you're all set! The 170-175mm range is such a small variation compared to the variation in human height; I guess bike companies are just catering for the median because it wouldn't be cost effective to make 20 different sizes.

Thanks Gents for the comments and advice. I’ll give it some more thought and research. At this stage there are no takers on the swop. Definitely a more complex topic than I initially thought at the onset

It would further the discussion if we understood the Why. Advising shorter cranks is all the rage at the moment. There are good arguments both ways.

Hip angles can be compensated by altering saddle position and height too. Cleat adjustment also plays a role. Within the variability of overall bike fit the crank length is really quite small.

I have a FSA SLK crank(carbon left and right BB30) , 172.5mm, PM on my current setup, have the extra crank for you to try out, if it works for you, sell the campy crank, and perhaps make me a deal on the FSA crank? Anyhow, it is here for you to give a go on 172.5mm, if it fits your frame. Inbox me for more details. ????

What effect does a shorter crank have when climbing and sprinting ??

lower leverage so less theoretical torque produced but it depends on your flexibility and body geometry.

There is an old school belief that shorter cranks allow higher cadence but I can produce the same rpm and torque with cranks in the 170 to 175mm range so it doesn't appear to make any difference to me
