Correct MTB front disc brake routing?

NotSoBigBen

Recommended Posts

So tonight I finished swapping brakes/shifters between 2 MTB's. While doing it I wondered if the way the front brake hose was routed should be outside or inside the fork leg.

Googling says inside but I worry that it seems pretty close to the spokes/wheel somehow. All my bikes have always had them outside but it sure looks neater on the inside ......... so I have done them both on the inside. It also seems to me that since it now doesn't rub on the crown of the fork those ugly marks wouldn't occur?

Any comments?

BigBen....what fork are you running? How are you securing the cable to the fork?

I ask because Fox has a neat bracket. Not sure about other makes. I spied a neat little trick from a mechanic mate that keeps the hose well away from the fork and looks very neat. I use it on my Fox since the replacement legs I got don't have the mounting for the bracket....can take a pic if you want?

Hey Mints, please do take a pic. Neither my Fox forks (F100X and F100RLT) or my Tora have a mounting Cry.

What I do have on 1 fork is one of those cable ties with the moulded in cable holder. Generally I just use cable ties, lazy now to go out into the cold to the garage but will take a pic of the three different options with my phone before going to work and post them.

Mmm....my setup also uses a cabletie but in stead of special moulded bits just some clever routing. Nothing special....but short of the Fox bracket it's the best system I've seen.

Bikes at home....will take a pic when I go home and post in the morning as well

Outside front routing option !

Inside front routing!

I have tried the up the back of the fork leg behind the 'crown' but that leaves eventually deep grooves in it (often wondered how a mere brake hose can do that!).

Anyway what y'all think?

Hey Parra - would appreciate that thanks, Mint's also has some ideas and said he'd post them later as well.

The only problem with running the cable inside, is if a fat tyre is used (2.3). When serious mud packs on the wheel, it clears against the fork. Could grind the brake line somewhat. TNOSE_E2008-07-10 01:49:03

TNOSE_E - thought of that but I am hoping that running that 'skinny' 2.0 Killer Bee it should be OK, that is my test/project bike so I'm willing to take a few chances to see what happens though!
