Hi guys,

Going to Yzerfontein over Easter weekend and looking for some good gravel routes around the area?

(Around 100km)

also any MTB routes, definitely need to check out Wolwefontein.

Any Strava routes or suggestions will be much appreciated!

^ Good luck riding that. A fair chunk of that is tar, a some hard pack/loose gravel (yay) and (at this time of the year) a a whole stretch of loose sand. Some of it on a no-cycling-allowed road road in the WCNP.

Oh. And you have to cross private property. Twice.

Lots of options available:

1. Living Colour, between Yzerfontein and Darling, lots of single track and you do the entire Wolwefontein trails (day permit)

2. Khwa ttu Nature reserve, just outside Yzerfotein has some nice single track (day permit)

3. Darling, many options, gravel with plenty climbs, but you need to join a local who can show you the routes on the farms, unfortunately no markings etc... (free)

I have also met some friendly local MTB riders at "Die Skuim" coffee shop who I joined... Perhaps that's also a good point to start if you keen to join a group.

Any up-to-date suggestions for mtbing near Yzerfontein?  Spending a few days there next week.

Google seems to indicate Wolwefontein is currently closed?

Trailforks shows a trail at the San heritage reserve, but also shows it hasn't been ridden for more than 6 months. The trails map on their website, dated July 2025, indicates the route may be quite new though:

Please report back if you give it a go.

Thanks for the link to the trail maps, I was looking on their website but couldn't find anything. Was planning on trying there... rode there years ago.

!Khwa ttu trails are in great shape. Well sign posted. No cost to ride.

Nothing hectic or hugely technical, but just a nice ride out in nature. Lots of little wildlife scurrying in the undergrowth, a few bontebok and loads of kites circling above. For a 10km loop, i wouldn't drive all the way from Cape Town to do just this, but if you're in the area, it's definitely worth the ride.

I've organised the orienteering event for there the past few years. All as you said, but there is a minimal fee. Stay for lunch , food is incredible for what you pay

Can also ride at living colour on the way to darling. Trails have been taken over by an outfit so getting rebuilt along the way. Nice pump track growing too. twiga trails on Instagram
