SlickSticker Posted July 4, 2022 Share It's been years since Ive been on my bike. Had to sell my MTB but kept my road bike. The long holiday from cycling is because of many reasons but mainly because of hip trouble. Now that I have had a complete hip replacement 8 weeks ago I am fast on the way to good recovery. My Polar watch tour de France limited edition needs a new battery and if I recall, the HRM game my hassles as well. With technology that has progressed so much over the years, I'm considering just using my phone. So the question is: what is suggested for sensors for my phone, cadence, HRM, speed (although speed is probably not needed with GPS?) My phone is android based. And are there recommended phone case/holders, as mentioned, road cycling. I have to stress that money is now a mojor factor. All the best Edited July 4, 2022 by SlickSticker
HdB Posted July 4, 2022 Share HRM is probably all you need, cadence is a bonus if you like having it. Speed should be good enough from the GPS. There are probably other brands as well, but the Marvel ones available on CWC is pretty cheap, and are dual BT/ANT+ so should work with phone and dedicated GPS. https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/marvel-heart-rate-monitor-strap https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/marvel-speed-cadence-sensor

Hard to read info while on the bike, mounting issues, risk of damaging device .... Perhaps consider an entry level Garmin or wahoo or a forerunner watch. JohanDiv Posted July 5, 2022 Share My partner did the entire Epic with just his phone and a HR monitor tracking with the Strava App on his phone. He has one of those toptube bags that holds your spares and snacks, and your phone on top. Connect your HR monitor to the Strava app on your phone that tracks your rides with GPS. While you ride it shows you everything you need. Speed, Average Speed, HR, Average HR, Elevation Gain etc. This would probably be your cheapest option. I wouldn't worry too much about a cadence sensor at this point.. M L
