How is a 12 spd chain compatible with 11spd? Just to be clear its a 11spd chain.

Chains get slightly narrower as the speed increases

So 12spd chain is slightly narrower than your existing 11spd chain.

They work nearly identical and are often easier to find. I haven't had an 11 spd bike for quite some time now but it ran 12 spd chains for long and never missed

Try it or don't... its just another option if you're having a hard time finding the perfect one.

Not sure of the model number.  But Evobikes, and all the other outlets, have a range of 11 speed chains.

You could use any 11 speed chain, or ask for an "e-bike 11 speed" chain if you want something stronger.

There was a short period when I could only get the shorter chains, but last I looked they had stock of the longer chains as well.

Recently got some e-bike chains for a normal 11 speed. Work fine, longer life and more links than you need.

do you have anyone from JHB coming down soon?
alternatively, stomach the courier cost, consdiering the price per chain. Bikemarket has new (unboxed) Wippermann Connex chains for an absolute steal

https://bikemarket.co.za/home/shop/components/drivetrain-gearing/chains/chain-11spd-connex-118-links-unboxed/

I've got 10 speed ones runnning on my bikes, and one sitting spare. they are also a dream for maintenance due to the quicklink design.

Will just import a few then, should be cheaper also.

EDIT - I see my last purchase from my LBS was actually a CN-HG701-11, just over R900.  This was about 4 months back.

The CN-HG601-11 is about R300 cheaper, but also ebike rated.  Just make sure to get the 126 link version, not the 116 link ....

My ebikes came with KMC e-bike chains, "e11" on the box.  Significantly cheaper, but I could not get stock then.  These chains are giving me more than 4 000km of trail riding  (still not worn out).

What is considered a “normal price”? I certainly wouldn’t buy from CWC at R899

Many regions have a geo-lock on Shimano products, eg CRC, Bike24, etc., so they won’t ship to SA.

Bike24 is €26 (R520 before shipping, handling and ATV). Shipping is a flat rate of €19.99, so the more you ship the less it costs per item.

Some Bike shops in Gauteng are under R700. Add R99 for a courier (Courier Guy, Aramex), and you’ll get in a few days). There are some honest Hubbers that could arrange to pay and send it down.

Edit: you pay them, and they can buy it and send it down.

The last batch was just over R900.

Exchange rate has worsened since ....

There should still be some sort of international pricing parity on specific parts, not a 80% difference. Also how is it that older 11spd can be more expensive than newer 12spd, but only locally..

Fully agree.

Only commented on actual prices in the Western Cape over the last 6 months.

Are there any shops in Cape town that has a CN- HG 701 chain in stock, also at a not inflated but normal price?

Try John O'Connor Cycles. They had the best price in Cape Town (same as Evobikes) when I bought a 105 chain last month.

A lot of shops don't have stock and some of the few that have stock understand the leverage they have on the market.

It seems to be a common thing for chains. I regularly see the same brand/level 10 speed chains more expensive than 11 speed, and now 11 going for more than 12 (cassettes and chains)

I'm VERY surprised to hear that.
